Twitch CEO explains why Kick made a mistake poaching its biggest streamers

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy believes that Kick is making a mistake by attempting to recruit streamers from the Amazon-owned platform. He predicts that those who do leave will eventually come back.

Ever since its launch in 2022, Kick has consistently attracted streamers with a significant fan base on Twitch.

Since its launch, Kick has seen some of the biggest names in the streaming world, including xQc, Amouranth, and Adin Ross, make the move from Twitch to the platform.

On June 13, 2024, during an interview with Twitch streamer NateGentile7, Clancy expressed his belief that Kick is making a mistake by poaching top streamers from the Amazon-owned platform instead of focusing on industry growth. He also predicts that these streamers will eventually return to Twitch.

“He expressed that our main issue is the size of the live streaming industry, as it needs to expand. He also pointed out that the source of [Kick’s] funds is no secret, but the concern lies in their long-term stability and motives.”

Clancy also drew a comparison between Kick and TikTok, noting that the latter does not actively poach streamers from Twitch. Instead, they focus on attracting new streamers to their platform. Clancy strongly disagrees with the mindset of assuming the live stream market is already saturated and attempting to simply take what others have.

“Once [Kick] stops paying them, they will immediately return. This pattern has been seen with Mixer and YouTube, where they were compensated but eventually returned.”

Therefore, rather than being concerned about Kick, Clancy explains that his main priority is implementing new features to assist streamers in their growth on Twitch.

In the course of 2023 and the initial months of 2024, Twitch has implemented additional features that allow streamers to share their content on both Twitch and short-form video platforms such as TikTok and Instagram reels.

In September 2023, Twitch introduced a new feature that allows streamers to create vertical clips directly from their dashboard. Additionally, users can now easily export these clips to TikTok. In May 2024, Twitch redesigned their mobile app to prioritize vertical clips from popular streamers. Upon opening the app, these clips are immediately displayed front and center.
