During a TwitchCon announcement, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy revealed that the platform will soon introduce a new shared chat feature.
The chat functionality on Twitch has undergone various enhancements since its inception, as the platform continually explores innovative ideas.
For example, in June 2023, Twitch launched the Hype Chat feature, allowing viewers to express their support and stand out during live streams. Additionally, an update last June introduced Chat Warnings to help streamers and moderators manage harassment more effectively.
According to CEO Dan Clancy, another exciting update is on the horizon. He announced during a TwitchCon stream that a shared chat feature is currently being developed.
Clancy explained, “When we knock on these people’s door, we will all be in one chat stream… that way everyone is in one chat session, hanging with each other…”
This means that when multiple content creators join the same stream, their communities will converge into a single chat session, enhancing interactivity.
Twitch demonstrated this new shared chat feature live with Simply during Dan Clancy’s stream on September 19. Simply reacted by saying, “Wait, everyone’s blogging together. This is so cool!”
The Twitch CEO also confirmed that this feature will go “live for everyone next week.” However, as of this writing, no official launch date has been established.
While this could indicate a positive development in community integration among streamers, it may also introduce complexities in both the short and long term. Moderators already face a significant workload, and this could add pressure to how they manage the chat environment.
Moreover, even with tools in place to combat toxic behavior, shared comments across multiple streams could result in increased challenges. It is hoped that these potential issues will be addressed as the feature is rolled out.
