Twitch CEO Wants to Do TwitchCon Asia But There’s a Big Problem

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy expressed his desire to bring TwitchCon to Asia, but acknowledged that significant modifications would be necessary compared to the events held in Europe and North America.

TwitchCon is a unique event that unites streamers and viewers, providing an opportunity for fans to meet their beloved content creators and fellow chat participants.

Despite having hosted the event in both North America and Europe, Asia has yet to experience it. Dan Clancy suggests that Twitch may never actually implement a convention in Asia, at least not to the same extent as they have in other regions.

During a live event in Tokyo, the CEO of Twitch was directly questioned about the feasibility of having TwitchCon Asia. Despite expressing a desire to organize such an event, the CEO elaborated on the difficulties that may arise in its creation.

“Currently, we have not formulated any plans. However, I am interested in doing so. Our priority is to determine the most effective approach. It is important that our current strategies are sustainable before moving forward,”he explained. “If we were to organize a TwitchCon in Tokyo, it would likely have a unique Japanese twist.”

Clancy pointed out that language is a significant concern, citing TwitchCon Europe as an example. The CEO highlighted that the majority of events are conducted in English, and most attendees are proficient in the language.

“He emphasized the importance of finding a location that is suitable for both the streamers and viewers in that country. It is unlikely that viewers from Taiwan or Melbourne would be able to travel to Tokyo, so it would be considered a Japan TwitchCon. Similarly, if the event was held in Australia, it would be seen as an Australian TwitchCon. The distance between countries also presents a logistical challenge.”

Clancy also mentioned that a TwitchCon Asia would not be possible in the same format as the ones in NA or EU due to the significantly smaller attendance.

Despite this, it appears that there are plans in the works for potential mini-events in various countries in the future. As mentioned by the CEO, if TwitchCon were to be held in the Eastern region, it would have to be unique in some way.

Despite the lack of current plans for Twitch events in Asia, it is improbable that any will be scheduled in South Korea after the platform’s closure in the country. As a result, two Korean streaming services have emerged with intentions to compete with Twitch on a global scale later this year.
