Twitch is implementing new measures to combat channels that rebroadcast content from other creators, specifically by banning “waiting room”streams.
Over the years, the platform has had to adjust its policies to address controversial streaming trends, such as hot tub broadcasts, and has recently taken significant steps to tackle the issue of unoriginal content.
On September 13, the Amazon-owned platform revealed that “waiting rooms”would no longer be permitted.
These waiting rooms are essentially fan-operated rebroadcasts of a creator’s streams that do not include original commentary, such as reaction content.
“Going forward, ‘waiting rooms’ will be prohibited on Twitch under our policies and can be reported as ‘Impersonation.’ To ensure accurate enforcement, we will consider various factors like stream title and channel bio, as well as any reports from the impersonated channel,” stated Twitch in a post on X.

Twitch indicates that the primary concern with these rebroadcasts is that they detract views and potential revenue from the original content creators.
A review of Twitch reveals that several “waiting rooms” are still active, including those for Valorant star Tenz and political streamer Hasan, indicating that the platform may be giving channel owners a grace period before imposing suspensions.
However, traditional reaction streams remain permissible as they involve active viewer engagement and commentary.
“Waiting room” streams have become increasingly problematic on Twitch.
Twitch clarified that “waiting rooms” where creators are anticipating game updates, new character launches, or other content are not in violation of this new policy.
Additionally, IRL streamers broadcasting from a hospital waiting area will face no repercussions regarding this policy.
It will be intriguing to observe how these “waiting room” channels adapt to this change and whether they will find ways to make their rebroadcasts more original, potentially incorporating AI-driven commentary.
This is not the only content restriction Twitch has introduced in 2024. Earlier this year, the platform also banned broadcasts that have a prolonged focus on intimate body parts.
