RazDog Holdings has initiated legal action against Twitch, alleging that the homepage and tag system of the Amazon-owned platform violate their patents.
Upon visiting Twitch’s website, users will immediately see a prominent carousel showcasing live streams on the main page.
Visitors have the option to use the buttons on both the left and right sides to navigate through the highlighted creators, allowing them to easily browse the creators that Twitch is promoting.
According to a recently filed lawsuit, RazDog Holdings is alleging that Twitch’s home page feature is in violation of their patent which was submitted in 2011.
According to the filing, RazDog developed the software in the late 2000s and subsequently won a Microsoft sponsored competition. As a result, they were able to successfully obtain patents for their “carousel for interactive media.”
According to RazDog, Twitch’s incorporation of a carousel to sort live streams at the top of the homepage violates its long-standing patent because it operates without requiring the end user to download a plugin.
According to the attached Exhibit 3 and 4, the RazDog Patents are infringed by various implementations of the Twitch VideoSystem, including the use of carousels and a remote tool box. These services and features, referred to as the “TwitchInfringing Services,”are in violation of the RazDog Patents.
The lawsuit further alleges that Twitch’s tag and suggested channels systems are violating a distinct patent for a “remote toolbox”owned by RazDog holdings.
In the case against Amazon-owned Twitch, RazDog is requesting a trial by jury and seeks compensation for Twitch’s infringement in an amount that is deemed sufficient.
In 2024, there have been multiple news stories surrounding Twitch. Recently, the platform was fined $300,000 by the South Korean government for violating the country’s telecom laws by removing VODs from the site.
