Twitch Reveals New Transparent Ban Policy: Criticism Over Being ‘Years Too Late’

Twitch is finally increasing transparency regarding its ban process by providing streamers with more detailed information about their suspensions. Users express that these changes should have been implemented years ago.

At TwitchCon, CEO Dan Clancy announced that the platform will offer clearer insights regarding violations leading to suspensions, informing users exactly what actions resulted in their bans.

Initially, this will involve sharing chat messages if the violation occurred in chat, and in the future, Twitch will include a clip showcasing the infraction, allowing streamers to understand their mistakes and take corrective measures moving forward.

While this update is largely viewed as a positive development, many believe that the Amazon-owned platform delayed in adding these crucial features for far too long.

On social media, users responded positively to the announcement and largely agreed that reforms regarding bans were overdue.

“This should have been a thing from the jump,” said one user.

“This should’ve been something Twitch implemented from the beginning,” echoed another.

“Only took how many years of people asking to finally get this?” rhetorically asked a popular VTuber.

Others speculated on why the ban clarification took so long to implement, questioning the motives behind its delayed introduction.

“It seems they hold back in-demand features as part of a marketing strategy, waiting until they face challenges before releasing ‘breaking’ features that everyone had previously wanted to regain user interest,” remarked another user.

“This was long overdue. Why do I feel like this decision was influenced by the Doc situation?” another user questioned.

Dr Disrespect famously faced a ban from Twitch in 2020, the reasons for which were initially unclear until former employees revealed he had been involved in inappropriate messaging with a minor. Although he admitted to sending the messages, he has disputed their interpretation and accused Twitch of using selective DMs as justification for his ban. He has since refrained from disclosing which messages led to his permanent suspension.

We will have to wait and see if the new features make the delay worthwhile when they start rolling out later in 2024.
