Two Arrested in TikTok-Related Death After Daring Teen to Consume Lethal Alcohol Amount

On December 26, 2024, the tragic death of TikTok influencer Thanakarn Kanthee, popularly known as ‘Bank Lester,’ raised serious concerns about the dangers associated with social media challenges. Bank Lester was notorious for participating in perilous stunts in exchange for monetary rewards.

The 27-year-old influencer succumbed after consuming an excessive amount of liquor at a party in Chanthaburi province, Thailand. During the event, he was challenged to drink two 350ml bottles of brandy, with a promise of receiving 10,000 baht (approximately $585) for each bottle.

This incident unfolded around 11 PM on Christmas Day, with Kanthee pronounced dead in the hospital around 3:40 AM on December 26. Following the event, a video surfaced showing Kanthee drinking the alcohol, capturing his initial consciousness before he subsequently vomited, leading to a viral spread across social media.

The Consequences of Reckless Social Media Challenges

In the wake of Bank Lester’s death, authorities have arrested two suspects. Ekkachat “M” Meeprom was apprehended at his residence in Chanthaburi. He is accused of encouraging Kanthee to consume the lethal alcohol in exchange for money and is facing charges of negligent homicide, with a potential sentence of up to ten years in prison.

The second suspect, Theerawat “Bird” Srirong, was detained at a coffee shop in Pathum Thani. He allegedly facilitated Bank Lester’s attendance at the fatal party and has been accused of regularly exploiting the TikToker during his brief career. Srirong faces additional charges for uploading inappropriate content.

Bank Lester had gained notoriety for consuming various hazardous substances as part of his challenges, aiming to support his grandmother financially. His history includes drinking everything from hand sanitizer to lubricant, driven by the need to fend for his family. Bank Lester’s upbringing was marked by hardship; he was raised by his grandmother after his parents separated shortly after his birth. He began working at the tender age of seven to help make ends meet.
