The hit series Stranger Things may have wrapped up, but discussions about its intriguing final moments, particularly the so-called ‘Conformity Gate’, continue to captivate fans. Recently, Caleb McLaughlin, who portrays Lucas on the show, weighed in on the fan speculation surrounding an alternate ending.
Even though Stranger Things concluded earlier this year, the fervor among the audience persists, leading to theories that an alternative epilogue was in the works. The ‘Conformity Gate’ theory suggested that the show’s final scenes were merely an illusion masterfully crafted by the character Vecna, with some fans believing a true finale would be revealed on January 7. However, that speculation proved unfounded, and McLaughlin has now expressed his candid thoughts about this fan-created narrative.
McLaughlin’s Perspective on ‘Conformity Gate’

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McLaughlin described his initial reaction to the Conformity Gate theory as “dumb.” He acknowledged the audience’s desire for more content but emphasized that the story of Stranger Things has come to a definitive close.“It’s over, guys, ”he stated.“It’s been 10 years. We were kids, and now we’ve grown up. We don’t need more of us.”
According to McLaughlin, the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, aimed to retain an optimistic tone throughout the narrative. He noted that any departure from that wouldn’t resonate with the essence of what Stranger Things has always communicated.“The finale concluded where it began, which is appropriate, ” he asserted.“We started off Season 1 playing Dungeons & Dragons and concluded in the same fashion.”
He further explained that the perspective should not stray from Mike’s storytelling—an essential thread woven throughout the series.“The idea of ‘more to come’ is merely Mike’s imagination, ” McLaughlin added, emphasizing the narrative’s core theme of storytelling.
SNL Spoof and Behind the Scenes Fun
Shortly after the finale aired, Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike, took to the stage as host of Saturday Night Live. During his episode, he included a comedic sketch that parodied the Conformity Gate theory. McLaughlin, along with Gaten Matarazzo, joined him in this entertaining segment. Reflecting on the experience, Caleb shared, “Finn called and invited me to come a day early for the show, and of course, I was going to support him. When they suggested I participate in the skit, I eagerly agreed.”
As fans eagerly await more adventures in the Upside Down, the future looks bright for the young cast, who are embarking on new projects. Stay tuned for updates on the upcoming Stranger Things spinoff and what thrilling endeavors lie ahead for them.
