Catching Legendary Pokémon in Pokémon Go
The primary method for capturing a Legendary Pokémon is to first defeat it in a 5-Star Raid Battle. These battles occur at Gyms, and typically require collaboration with at least five other trainers to secure a victory.
Upon defeating a Legendary, you will receive a limited quantity of Premier Balls to use for capturing it. The catch rates are low, meaning success is never guaranteed after a battle.
Catching a Legendary involves a blend of precision, persistence, and a bit of luck.
You can enhance your capturing opportunities by achieving Excellent Throws and utilizing Curve Balls. Additional Premier Balls can be earned depending on your performance during the battle or by attacking in a Gym aligned with your team’s color.
Ensure you have sufficient Raid Passes before embarking on your Legendary hunt, as these are necessary items for participation. For assistance on acquiring more Remote Raid Passes, check out our dedicated guide.
Getting the Galarian forms of Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos works differently; these regional variants are found exclusively when using Daily Adventure Incense, though their occurrence is rare.
Cosmog also requires a unique approach. Capturing Cosmog can only be accomplished by completing the Cosmic Companion Special Research story, which is also how you can evolve it into either Solgaleo or Lunala.
Current Legendary Pokémon Available for Capture
The Galarian forms of the Legendary Birds (Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres) remain available, though they can only be found using Daily Adventure Incense and tend to have a high flee rate.
The Lake Trio (Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf) can also be encountered in the wild or through 5-Star Raid battles, but are region-locked.
During the month of October, Shadow Entei will be accessible during Shadow Raids every weekend. Furthermore, Zacian, Zamazenta, and Giratina in its Origin Forme will be featured in 5-Star Raids, all of which will have designated Raid Hours throughout the month.
Niantic frequently updates the Legendaries that appear in 5-Star Raids, so to stay informed about what’s currently catchable, refer to our monthly Raid Boss guide.
Typically, only one Legendary will be available at a time, unless there’s a special event, such as Pokémon Go Fest 2021, where every single Legendary made an appearance!
