How to Unlock Rare Crops in Lightyear Frontier
To cultivate rare crops in Lightyear Frontier, you must first establish contact with Ulf, a friendly botanist from a nearby planet who seeks to initiate a research project on the arcane plant life found in the Frontier. After you’ve constructed an Outpost for him on your farm, he will arrive via his spacecraft, and you can embark on his questline.
The primary goal of Ulf’s questline is to successfully produce mutated (rare) versions of all the crops available on the planet. To achieve this, you’ll need to build a Seed Splicer (illustrated above) at his Outpost, which will enable you to splice regular crop seeds found throughout the Frontier into seeds that may yield mutated variations. As long as you have discovered and grown a specific type of regular crop at least once, you can use Ulf’s Seed Splicer to splice those seeds.
If you’re short on any seeds required for splicing, you can also purchase them from Lola, should she have them in stock. Alternatively, you may need to explore the map using your Mech to gather them.
After placing enough seeds into the Seed Splicer to create several spliced seeds, sow them in any available crop plot and water them daily, just like you would with regular crops. In a few days, your plants will fully mature, and at least one should display visible differences in size and color, indicating it is a mutated crop. You can then submit this crop to Ulf for his research and to advance his questline.
Your goal is to provide Ulf with at least one of every type of possible mutated crop, while the remainder can be sold to Lola for a significant profit boost.

Keep in mind that even when you sow spliced seeds and care for them like traditional crops, only a small percentage will actually produce mutated crops. Therefore, the more spliced seeds you plant, the better your chances of generating a substantial yield of rare crops to provide to Ulf for his research and profitably sell to Lola.
