Curious about conquering the Dragon boss in Metaphor: ReFantazio? Although your companions advise steering clear of this optional challenge in the Nord Mines, with the proper Archetypes and approach, you’ll find it quite manageable to defeat.
Is It Worth Fighting the Dragon in Metaphor: ReFantazio?
Definitely consider engaging the Dragon, known as “Fire Dragon Mauna” in Metaphor: ReFantazio, since the benefits you can earn are too great to overlook, and the level prerequisites for a fair challenge aren’t excessively high.
Fire Dragon Mauna operates at Level 12, meaning as long as your party members hit at least Level 8, they should endure the boss’s attacks well enough to survive a few hits.
That said, prepare for a prolonged encounter due to the Dragon’s high HP. Ensure you have ample Medicine and Revival Medicine stocked to keep your team healthy. Its Scratch attack can deliver Critical Hits, and losing a party member unexpectedly can turn the tide against you.
Identifying Fire Dragon Mauna’s Weakness
In this section of Metaphor: ReFantazio, the only disadvantage of Fire Dragon Mauna is its vulnerability to Ice damage.
To exploit this weakness, ensure at least one character wields the Mage Archetype at Rank 02, where they gain access to the Ice spell, Blizz.
If your MAG is insufficient for multiple Mages, you can purchase several Ice Chunks from the Young Pedder located in Dig Site #3, which are consumables dealing 100 Ice damage each time you use them.
Optimal Team Composition & Strategy to Defeat the Dragon
To successfully take down Fire Dragon Mauna, your ideal team configuration should include either two Mages paired with one Warrior or one Mage supported by two Warriors.
Avoid Using the Seeker in This Battle
It’s advisable to omit the Seeker Archetype from your lineup, as it is particularly vulnerable to the Dragon’s Fire-type attacks, particularly Fireball. Given that the Dragon’s attacks are already quite damaging, having a member easily taken out can lead to overwhelming odds against your team.
Conversely, the Warrior Archetype is resilient to Fire attacks. Plus, its passive ability, Heat Up, increases its Attack power if another Warrior is present on the field.
Thus, consider replacing the protagonist’s Seeker with a Rank 02 Mage for Ice damage, or augment your Warrior count for additional damage output along with fire resistance for better survival.
Focus on Ice Attacks & Healing
With either Grius or the Travelling Boy Protagonist as Mages at Rank 02, ensure at least one character is consistently using Blizz for optimal Ice damage against the Dragon boss.
Utilize Strohl or the protagonist as Warriors to deliver additional hits using Diagonal Slash. Also, have any member who drops below half health or is knocked out retreat to the backline to utilize Medicine or Revival Medicine, minimizing damage from Mauna’s assaults during enemy turns.
Remember the Corrosive Acid
Despite Fire Dragon Mauna’s high HP making for an extended battle, you can simplify matters by using a key item: Corrosive Acid. This consumable functions similarly to the Rakunda skill from Persona 5, reducing an opponent’s Defense for three turns.
If you’ve already battled and defeated numerous Gelatinos in the Nord Mines, you likely have some in your inventory since they can drop as loot after encounters. Using this item on Fire Dragon Mauna will lower its Defense, making your fight significantly less strenuous.
Rewards for Defeating Fire Dragon Mauna
Once you successfully strike the final blow against the Dragon in Metaphor: ReFantazio, your initial rewards include 263 EXP, 210 A-EXP, 1000 MAG, 1000 Money, and an Amethyst gem, along with a nearby chest containing the exceptional weapon, Dragon’s Indignation.
There are additional treasures next to the chest such as Grand Iron and Glossy Fur, but the standout prize remains the Dragon’s Indignation.
Featuring an Attack stat of 111 and a Hit of 95, this weapon is currently the best available in the game, even prior to its potential purification at a church as noted in its description.
