Steve Blackman, creator of The Umbrella Academy, has expressed his desire to continue with a spinoff series centered around a particular controversial character.
The Umbrella Academy’s fourth and final season marks the conclusion of its five-year journey through different universes and adventures.
The focus of the Netflix show has been on the Hargreeves siblings, who are constantly being transported to different universes in their efforts to prevent the apocalypse they unwittingly bring about.
Despite Season 4 potentially marking the conclusion for the youthful Academy members, show creator Steve Blackman has expressed his desire to develop a spinoff series centered around the infamous antagonist and father of the siblings, Reginald Hargreeves.
Although he did discuss his interest in following the lives of side characters such as Commission assassins Hazel and Cha Cha, the individual Blackman was truly eager to explore in more depth was Reginald.
Blackman revealed that the team had a well-developed backstory for Reginald Hargreeves and his wife, and they had planned to tell their origin story in an entertaining cold open.
“Due to the rising costs, we were unable to carry out our plans, but we put in a lot of effort and research into it. I had a detailed plan of his backstory and was eager to share his story. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to showcase it in the future.”
Ever since Season 1, Reginald Hargreeves has been a enigmatic presence in The Umbrella Academy. He has consistently played the role of a master manipulator in the children’s lives.
As the mastermind behind their transformation into world-renowned superheroes, he sacrificed their childhood. In Season 2, it was revealed that he belonged to an extraterrestrial species whose mission was to preserve the human timeline at all costs, even if it meant the destruction of the world.
Despite the lack of a concrete explanation, Reginald’s intentions for his children were evident throughout all three seasons of The Umbrella Academy.
A spinoff series could provide fans with the long-awaited answers about Reginald’s origins, true intentions, and reasoning behind forming the Umbrella Academy despite his aversion towards his adopted children.
The fourth season of The Umbrella Academy will debut on August 8 on Netflix.
