The recent Mythical Island expansion in the Pokémon TCG Pocket has unleashed a wave of innovative strategies for Player versus Player (PvP) gaming. While fan favorites like Mew ex and Celebi ex have consistently drawn the attention of players, the emergence of a surprising Gyarados ex pairing has caught many off guard, reshaping the competitive landscape.
Mastering deck strategies is crucial for acquiring Emblems in Pokémon TCG Pocket. The most effective card combinations empower players to dominate their opponents in PvP encounters. However, as certain decks become overwhelmingly popular, particularly those featuring Mewtwo ex, Mew ex, Celebi ex, and Charizard ex, it becomes essential for players to devise unique solutions to circumvent this saturation.
Although it may appear daunting to challenge such formidable meta staples, players in the TCG Pocket community have risen to the occasion. One creative player has disrupted the status quo with an unexpected duo: Gyarados ex paired with Druddigon.
Unleashing Power in a Dual-Type Deck
A recent social media post elaborated on this intriguing combination. The player highlighted how Gyarados ex, with its high hit points, coupled with the raw power of Druddigon, presents a significant challenge for opponents to overcome.

Although Gyarados ex is celebrated for its resilience despite high Energy costs, the true strength of this deck may lie in the lesser-known Druddigon. Initially dismissed as impractical due to its dual Energy requirements for attacks, Druddigon has proven to be a game-changer since the Mythical Island update.
The issue of dual Energy constraints in Pokémon TCG Pocket arises from the random selection of energy types each turn, which can derail even the most competent deck strategies. However, the synergy in this particular deck minimizes reliance on Energy sources. Druddigon’s Ability deals 20 damage to opponents upon receiving damage, while Greninja contributes by inflicting 20 damage to any opposing cards through its own Ability. This strategic layout allows players to concentrate energy resources on Gyarados ex while still delivering substantial damage during the battle’s setup phase.
The community’s enthusiasm for this combination is palpable. One player commented, “THANK YOUUU! Can’t wait to try this haha,” reflecting a wave of excitement. Another added, “I’ve seen a version of this but utilizing Eevee and Vaporeon for their ability to switch around energy. If the initial card draw favors you, this deck could lead to victory. Otherwise, dismantling the basics is key to success.”
This configuration is emerging as a notable contender against the giants of the current meta. While Gyarados ex may be challenging to secure from packs, Druddigon only requires a modest investment of two-diamond rarity, making it accessible for players willing to utilize pack points.
