Uncovering the Hidden Link Between Smile 2 and The Shining

Smile 2 delivers a terrifying continuation of the story, featuring an ominous force that torments a renowned pop singer. Interestingly, this installment draws parallels to the horror classic, The Shining.

The Smile franchise shares thematic elements with iconic films such as The Ring, The Grudge, and It Follows, revolving around a curse that transfers from one victim to another.

In the original Smile, a therapist gets immersed in the sinister smiles surrounding her, indicating she’s become a victim of the curse. In contrast, Smile 2 shifts the focus to a celebrity plagued by this dark presence.

Parker Finn, the creator behind both films, shared insights with The Hollywood Reporter on how he guided his performers in embodying the unsettling smile, while also indicating influences from the legendary Stanley Kubrick.

“At times, actors arrive clearly well-rehearsed,” Finn reveals. “They show signs of having practiced in front of mirrors, while in other instances, they require a bit of guidance.

“The objective is to smile positively; it’s crucial not to overdo or tense the facial muscles. It’s essential to create a disconnect between the smile and the eyes, and it involves subtle adjustments in head positioning.

“A slight head tilt is significant; we drew inspiration from the famous ‘Kubrick Stare,’ and then it relies heavily on cinematic techniques.”

Malcolm McDowell exhibits the ‘Kubrick stare’ in A Clockwork Orange, as does Vincent D’Onofrio in Full Metal Jacket. However, Jack Nicholson’s portrayal in The Shining remains the most iconic, exemplified in this scene…

This isn’t the only linkage to Kubrick’s seminal horror film, as Jack’s son, Ray Nicholson, has a pivotal role in Smile 2. Remarkably, he had the opportunity to perform his own ‘Kubrick stare’ as per the guidance of his co-star, Naomi Scott.

In a conversation with THR during the film’s premiere in LA, Nicholson shared: “Before we started, Naomi prepared me by saying, ‘[Finn] has a very precise vision; he works closely with everyone, so don’t worry about making mistakes—he has a specific direction in mind.’ After we performed it, Naomi remarked, ‘Well, that’s one take, and we’re done.’”
