The narrative of *Solo Leveling* is steeped in intrigue, particularly surrounding the formidable King of the Dead, Ashborn, and the extraordinary enhancements bestowed upon the protagonist, Sung Jinwoo. This article aims to demystify Ashborn’s enigmatic background and explore how his legacy intertwines with Jinwoo’s rise to power.
Understanding Ashborn in Solo Leveling
Ashborn, recognized as the most powerful Ruler and the Greatest Fragment of Light, played a pivotal role in the lore of the *Solo Leveling* universe. Loyal to the absolute being overseeing their realm, Ashborn engaged in relentless battles against the Monarchs on his behalf.
His saga unfolds millennia prior to the events of the current timeline, within a chaotic realm characterized by two opposing forces: the Rulers, embodiments of light, and the Monarchs, manifestations of ultimate darkness. The absolute being that governed this universe chose to remain an observer, failing to intercede in the turmoil, relishing the conflict as entertainment rather than tragedy.
Despite Ashborn’s awareness of this dark secret, his unwavering loyalty placed him in a precarious position. Ultimately, the balance shifted when both Rulers and Monarchs uncovered the truth about their creator. In an effort to vanquish this ‘god,’ they turned against him. During this turmoil, Ashborn sustained grave injuries, teetering on the brink of death, only to realize that his creator had infused him with remarkable powers.
Desperate to protect the absolute being, Ashborn rushed to the battlefield, but he arrived too late; their master had already been defeated. Following this loss, the Rulers captured one of the most powerful Monarchs, Legia, the Monarch of Beginning.
To restore equilibrium, Ashborn reluctantly allied with the Monarchs, showcasing strength that both Rulers and Monarchs could scarcely comprehend. Even the formidable duo of Rakan and Baran was powerless to withstand him, leading to Baran’s tragic demise. Witnessing Ashborn’s unmatched abilities, the Rulers were left to plead for mercy.
Rather than seek vengeance, Ashborn wished for death, hoping to bring an end to the War. However, when the Rulers refused, they forced him into hiding, where he cultivated a shadow army with plans for revenge against Rakan.
The Succession of Jinwoo: Ashborn’s Choice
Ashborn’s choice of successor, Jinwoo, stemmed from his extraordinary resilience and capability, which surpassed the expectations set by Ashborn and the Architect.
Jinwoo, initially perceived as a weak E-rank hunter during the harrowing Double Dungeon incident, exemplified remarkable tenacity, inspiring Ashborn to select him for greatness.
As centuries passed since Ashborn’s retreat to form his shadow army, the Monarchs launched a fierce offensive against humanity, leading the Ruler to enlist humans, now known as hunters, as their vessels. Ashborn too ventured into the human domain, seeking a worthy successor.
To facilitate this, he formed an alliance with the mage Kandiaru, also known as the Architect. Together, they devised a sophisticated system aimed at identifying the ideal human successor, an arrangement where Ashborn offered Kandiaru immortality in exchange for this innovative system.
This system, structured akin to a game, challenged individuals’ mental and physical prowess under duress, pinpointing those best equipped to inherit Ashborn’s legacy. After years of scrutiny, one hunter emerged as a standout candidate: the protagonist, Sung Jinwoo, during the trauma of the Double Dungeon. Although Jinwoo initially met his end via a statue in the dungeon, the Architect resurrected him, aligning with Ashborn’s intentions.
Thus began Jinwoo’s odyssey, where he navigated various levels within the system, sharpening his skills to ultimately bear Ashborn’s powers. During the climactic “Monarchs War Arc,” Ashborn ultimately transferred his powers to Jinwoo, cementing him as the Shadow Monarch, the preeminent warrior destined to terminate the War between Rulers and Monarchs.
