Understanding Killer’s Devil Fruit in One Piece

In the world of author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga series, there are two dominant power systems – Haki and Devil Fruits. While Haki was primarily introduced after the time-skip, Devil Fruits have been present since the start and play a crucial role in the series’ action and plot.

Similarly, there are numerous Devil Fruits that serve various functions and are consumed by numerous individuals in One Piece. One of these individuals is Killer, whose reintroduction in the Wano arc has sparked curiosity among fans who often wonder about his Devil Fruit. Though the answer may be intricate, it can be found within the fandom of the series.

In truth, the so-called “Devil Fruit”possessed by Killer in One Piece is not a true Devil Fruit at all. It is actually a type of artificial fruit known as a SMILE Fruit, which was created by Caesar Clown at the request of former Shichibukai Donquixote Doflamingo and his former Yonko ally, Kaido. Unfortunately, Killer’s SMILE Fruit was defective and did not grant him any powers.

Explaining the Powers of a Devil Fruit User in One Piece

Certain SMILE Fruits have the ability to bestow Zoan-type powers, earning their users the nickname of Artificial Zoan users. As a result, the majority of SMILEs are deemed useless and do not provide any abilities.

One of the artificial Devil Fruits, known as SMILEs, has been consumed by Killer. This particular fruit has a side effect that prevents him from expressing negative emotions and limits him to only laughing and smiling. The name SMILEs was chosen with this specific side effect in consideration.

The creation of SMILEs in the One Piece universe is clearly explained through the inclusion of Caesar Clown as a character. Although the exact details of the procedure are not disclosed, fans have a general understanding of the production timeline and steps involved in the manufacturing of these synthetic Devil Fruits.

The key component is a substance called SAD, which is synthesized by Caesar Clown. This is achieved by combining the Lineage Factors extracted from various animals. These Factors are believed to hold the fundamental blueprint of life in the world of the series.

After Caesar Clown created SAD on Punk Hazard, it was transported to the SMILE Factory in Dressrosa, which was under the control of Donquixote Doflamingo.

The SMILE Factory functions as an indoor orchard, where luminescent sunflowers on the ceiling provide necessary light. This unique setup allows ordinary fruit trees to thrive, as SAD is introduced into an indoor river that flows into irrigation channels located beneath the trees, nourishing them at their root structures.

Can defective SMILEs be cured?

After learning about Killer’s Devil Fruit in One Piece, it is natural for fans to wonder if there is a possibility of a cure. This is because Killer is not the only character in the series who has consumed a defective SMILE Fruit. In fact, there is a whole group of Kaido’s Beast Pirates known as the Pleasures, who are named after the pain and suffering caused by their defective SMILE Fruits.

In Wano, the residents of Ebisu Town are also forced to consume imperfect SMILE Fruits in order to survive due to the scarcity of food. Similar to Killer and the Pleasures, they are infamous for their inability to express negative emotions. However, as of the time of writing this article, there is still no known cure for the defective SMILE Fruits.

Despite the challenges, Straw Hat doctor and main character Tony Tony Chopper remains determined to cure the SMILE Fruits. His ultimate goal is to travel the world and heal all diseases, making it highly likely that he will find a solution for Killer and others affected by the negative effects of the SMILE Fruit before the series concludes.
