Experienced PvP players can challenge themselves and progress through the various divisions and ranks in Destiny 2’s Competitive mode.
Similar to Trials of Osiris, Competitive is a 3v3 PvP playlist that serves as an alternative and provides exclusive rewards. It also has its own mechanics that Guardians must master in order to reach the pinnacle of success.
Despite this, there are several significant distinctions. The most prominent being that Competitive employs a stringent matchmaking system that pairs you with players of similar skill level. This primarily depends on your current rank, but in cases of low playlist population, you may be matched with players outside of your skill bracket.
Moreover, Competitive offers a comprehensive ranking system that resets only once per episode, providing players with a distinct long-term objective to strive towards – ascending the ranks. This makes Competitive an ideal platform for enhancing your gameplay before entering Trials for an intense weekend.
All Competitive Divisions and Ranks in order
There are eight divisions to choose from in Competitive: Untested, Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Adept, and Ascendant. Each division is further divided into three sub-tiers, with Untested being the starting point and Ascendant being the highest level achievable, reserved for only the most skilled Guardians.
Once you have been assigned to a starting division, you have the ability to progress through the ranks and increase your division rating by winning matches. On the other hand, if you lose games, your rating will decrease and you may be demoted to a lower rank. However, if you perform well in comparison to your teammates, the decrease in rating will be lessened.
The following are the Competitive divisions and ranks, arranged from lowest to highest, that you can progress through:
Rank | Division Rating | Rank | Division Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Copper 3 | 0 | Platinum 3 | 5,750 |
Copper 2 | 250 | Platinum 2 | 6,250 |

Bronze 3 | 1,250 | Adept 3 | 7,250 |

Competitive Rewards and Weapons
You can earn all of the rewards by playing Competitive, whether you complete games or direct them towards Lord Shaxx.
- The Riposte (Void Auto Rifle)
- Rose (Kinetic Hand Cannon)
- Mercurial Overreach (Arc Sniper Rifle)
- Belisarius-D (Strand Pulse Rifle)
- Artifice Armor
- Materials (Ascendant Shards, Prisms, Alloys, etc.)
- Increased Exotic catalyst drop rate
- Ascendant Division emblem
The Riposte is Competitive’s featured weapon for Episode: Echoes.
The main attraction of participating in Competitive mode is the availability of exclusive weapons. These include The Riposte, Rose, Mercurial Overreach, and Belisarius-D, all of which are highly sought-after meta weapons known for their strength in the current PvP sandbox.
To obtain The Riposte, the featured weapon of this season, players must complete seven placement matches in Competitive and then finish three regular games every week. The Riposte can be acquired once per character per week, while Lord Shaxx offers x3 Crucible Engrams and x25,000 Glimmer for the other Competitive weapons.
Moreover, the latest update, 7.3.5, enhanced the rewards for Competitive mode, expanding the selection of items for players to obtain through farming. This update also included Artifice Armor in the loot pool and significantly increased the chances of obtaining Exotic weapon catalysts after winning a game.
All Competitive Game Modes
Competitive now offers two different PvP game modes: Collision and Clash, both of which are 3v3. These modes were introduced in Update 7.3.6, replacing the previous modes of Survival and Countdown Rush.
Both Competitive game modes offer the same experience, so here’s what you can expect from both:
- In order to emerge victorious in a collision, you must outscore your opponents by capturing and controlling the zone. Only one zone will be active at a time, and defeating your opponents will not automatically result in gaining points.
- In order to win, you must defeat your opponents and score more points than them in a clash.
The playlist’s active game modes can be seen by hovering over the information modifier.
How Do Competitive Placement Matches Work?
Your first seven games at the beginning of every season will consist of the Placement Series, which is a series of matches that establishes the rank you will begin at. By winning more matches and performing strongly, you have the opportunity to achieve a higher rank and potentially bypass the lower divisions altogether.
After completing your Placement Series, you will receive a rank ranging from Copper to Gold. However, your previous ranks in past seasons or episodes will have an impact on your Placement Series. Therefore, it is highly improbable for a player of Ascendant caliber to be placed in Copper.
How does the competitive promotion series work?
Upon reaching the top tier of any division (Copper 1, Bronze 1, Silver 1, etc.), you will enter a Promotion Series where you will have the opportunity to advance to a higher division. To successfully be promoted, you must win at least two out of the three matches that follow.
Competitive Relegation Series: How It Works
If you fall to the lowest tier of any rank (Bronze 3, Silver 3, Gold 3, etc.), you will enter a Relegation Series where you may be demoted to a lower division. In order to avoid being demoted, you must win two out of the three matches that follow.
To increase your chances of winning matches and getting promoted, it is important to utilize the most effective PvP Weapons and Hunter, Titan, and Warlock builds that are currently dominating the meta.
