However, Yami Sukehiro stands out with a relatively simple design, primarily distinguished by how he contrasts with other citizens of the Clover Kingdom.
This distinction is accentuated by the reactions of the characters in Black Clover’s central setting, who frequently refer to Yami as merely a “foreigner” in the early episodes of the series. Consequently, many fans have questioned, “Why is Yami called a foreigner?” considering that he holds the position of a Magic Knight Captain in the Kingdom.
Yami Sukehiro’s Origins Clarify His Status as a Foreigner in Black Clover
Yami Sukehiro is labeled a foreigner in Black Clover because he hails from Hino Country and ended up on the shores of the Clover Kingdom. His being alone in this new land made him immediately noticeable, prompting others to label him a foreigner due to his distinct appearance. Thus, the reason behind the question, “Why is Yami called a foreigner?” is simply that he is one.
Yami originates from Hino Country, a realm that is introduced in the series’ final arc after Asta is sent there by Lucius Zogratis (who had previously impersonated Julius Novachrono). This country, inspired by Japan, exhibits stark differences compared to the Clover Kingdom. It is suggested that the citizens of each kingdom have limited awareness of one another, given the differing receptions Yami and Asta receive from the residents of their respective lands.
The exact distance separating Hino Country from Black Clover’s primary continent, where the Clover Kingdom is situated, remains unclear, but it is described as being quite remote. This notion is further reinforced by the cultural variances between the two nations, particularly in their magical practices. While Clover Kingdom citizens utilize Grimoires for spellcasting, Hino’s citizens rely on scrolls.
The Circumstances Behind Yami’s Departure from Hino Country
In Hino Country, Yami Sukehiro (with Sukehiro being his first name, following the Japanese naming convention) was born into a clan recognized for their assassin skills. Trained to be a magic swordsman by his father, who believed Sukehiro had the potential to become the strongest of the clan, he faced challenges at home due to his father’s alcoholism, which led him to protect his younger sister Ichika from their father’s violent outbursts.
At the age of 13, his father, tired of their clan’s peaceful existence, offered Sukehiro a secret drug that would induce a berserk state. Ichika intervened, wanting to spare her brother from such a fate, but unfortunately, she became the victim of their father’s wrath instead.
During this turmoil, Sukehiro and his friend Ryuya Ryudo (who is now the Shogun of Hino Country in the current timeline of Black Clover) devised a plan to conceal the truth from Ichika. They decided that Sukehiro would be held responsible for a subsequent massacre and would flee the country while Ryuya remained to care for Ichika.
This accounts for Yami Sukehiro’s departure from Hino Country and his eventual arrival in the Clover Kingdom, unraveling the original narrative about him getting lost while fishing. Hence, it clarifies the question of “why is Yami called a foreigner,” as the Black Bulls Captain is, in essence, a refugee from another nation.
