The highly anticipated Netflix series No Good Deed features a star-studded cast, including an exciting reunion between two beloved actors from the early 2000s romantic comedy classic, Legally Blonde.
Created by Liz Feldman, renowned for her work on Dead to Me, No Good Deed is a darkly comedic tale centered around Lydia and Paul, a couple navigating the challenges associated with selling their Los Angeles home. As various families compete for the coveted property, hidden secrets emerge, particularly the unresolved mystery surrounding their son, Jacob.
Since its premiere on December 12, No Good Deed has quickly ascended to the second position on Netflix’s top 10 chart, partially owing its success to its impressive ensemble cast.
Celebrating the Reunion of Legally Blonde Stars
Among the prospective buyers of Lydia and Paul’s home are JD Campbell and Margo, characters portrayed by Legally Blonde alumni Luke Wilson and Linda Cardellini.
In the 2001 romantic comedy, Luke Wilson charmed audiences as Emmett Richmond, the supportive love interest of Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon. Contrarily, Cardellini took on the role of Chutney Windham, the film’s secret antagonist, pivotal to Elle’s triumph as a lawyer.
During an interview with ET to discuss No Good Deed, Wilson and Cardellini shared their enthusiasm about the reunion but also humorously expressed their lack of knowledge regarding the possibility of a third installment of Legally Blonde. When asked if they would reprise their roles, Cardellini quipped, “Is Chutney out of jail?” to which Wilson responded, “I think we’d both be back.”
In the new series, the actors assume different roles: Wilson plays JD, a struggling soap opera actor determined to impress his new wife, Margo. Meanwhile, Margo, depicted by Cardellini, thrives on deceit and revels in spending JD’s earnings on luxury items.
Though Legally Blonde remains an iconic part of Wilson and Cardellini’s portfolios, their careers span various genres. Wilson has starred in esteemed films directed by Wes Anderson, including Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and The Royal Tenenbaums, and is also recognizable as the brother of fellow actors Andrew and Owen Wilson. Cardellini is well-remembered for her roles in Netflix’s Dead to Me, the live-action Scooby-Doo films, and her portrayal of Laura Barton in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano Headline the Cast
Among the prominent figures in the No Good Deed lineup is Lisa Kudrow, famed for her role as Phoebe Buffay in Friends, who takes on the character of Lydia. Ray Romano, best known for his time on Everybody Loves Raymond, plays Paul.
The cast further includes O-T Fagbenle as Dennis, who is imbued with a charmingly relatable charisma and has previously made waves as Lucas Bankole in The Handmaid’s Tale and in the role of Barack Obama in The First Lady. His on-screen counterpart, Carla, is played by Teyonah Parris, recognized for her portrayal of Monica Rambeau in the MCU, as well as her standout role in Mad Men.
The ensemble also features Abbi Jacobson and Poppy Liu, who portray Leslie and Sarah, a young couple eyeing the property. Denis Leary, known for his role as George Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man, appears as Mikey, Paul’s brother with a shady past, while Chloe East, notable for her role in Heretic, plays Emily, the daughter of Lydia and Paul.
In a discussion with Blavity TV, Kudrow expressed how her character presented a unique challenge: “There are so many different tones with comedy. No matter how many times you’ve done a sitcom or a movie with comedy, the ones are different, so that’s always kind of the nerves when you’re starting something different,” she explained.
Romano echoed this sentiment, noting, “The difference is we still wanted it to be real and not tip over into cartoon-land. That’s a tricky thing, to have characters who could be considered over the top and broad, but still believable.”
The duo both appreciated the enjoyment derived from filming, with Romano reflecting, “The good thing about this show is every couple has a different story. Somebody’s going to be able to identify with it… it’s what attracted me to the script.”
No Good Deed is currently available for streaming on Netflix, offering viewers a captivating mix of humor and drama.
