Episode 9 of Agatha All Along concludes the intriguing journey of Agatha Harkness alongside Billy Maximoff (or perhaps Kaplan) as they traverse the Witches’ Road.
This installment diverged from typical Marvel finales; it wasn’t a grand, explosive affair filled with excessive cameos setting the stage for countless upcoming MCU adventures.
Rather, showrunner Jac Schaeffer delivered an intimate episode revealing deeper insights into Agatha’s past, illuminating her life before she transformed into the infamous witch of Westview. Interestingly, while Agatha was known for stealing magic from other witches during her early years, the episode’s most shocking revelation was her deep affection for her son, Nicholas Scratch, affectionately called Nicky.
Previously, viewers might have thought Agatha was a heartless mother who sacrificed her son to Mephisto in exchange for the powers of the Darkhold. However, the reality surrounding Nicky’s demise was far more tragic than we anticipated, offering us the most impactful moment of the series.
Nicholas Scratch
Before we delve into that emotional scene, we need to explore the circumstances of Nicholas’s arrival into this world. It turns out that Nicky’s birth was clouded with tragedy, as he was initially destined to perish during delivery. However, Rio (whom we know as Mistress Death) intervened out of love for Agatha, allowing Nicky to live.
Agatha and Nicky then spent about six years wandering across America, engaging in witch hunts, raising goats, and even creating an unforgettable song (“down, down, down, we go!”). Their adventures were filled with joy—until one fateful night when Nicky wakes up to find Rio waiting, and she eventually takes him away.
Then comes the heart-wrenching moment of the episode. The next morning, Agatha discovers that her dear son has passed away. There are no spectacular battles with Mephisto’s minions, no clever exchanges, or thrilling confrontations with cosmic entities. Nicky simply slipped away peacefully while Agatha lay beside him.
This poignant moment strikes a deep chord, echoing the often-unvarnished reality of death. Those who have faced loss understand that the experience rarely aligns with cinematic portrayals. No dramatic farewells or stirring last words; sometimes, people just drift into eternal sleep.
We All Need More Time
For a production within the Marvel universe—a franchise that, while beloved, is not particularly noted for nuanced emotional depth—having such a beautifully authentic emotional moment was a delightful surprise, especially amidst the playful and whimsical tone of Agatha All Along.
The talented Kathryn Hahn’s portrayal of Agatha played a significant role in delivering that moment. It was neither overwrought nor overly sentimental but rather depicted a mother’s desperate calls—an individual accustomed to wielding power, struggling to awaken her son and confronting the reality that, despite her abilities, she cannot bring him back to life.
This scene resonated deeply with me, marking it as the standout moment of the series. It encapsulates the essential themes of Agatha All Along. It addresses the universal desire to remain close to those we’ve lost, the ways in which grief can propel us toward the unimaginable, and the heartbreaking reality that sorrow can drive one to make unthinkable choices.
