The release of Jerry Seinfeld’s latest movie, Unfrosted, on Netflix has caused controversy due to a Mad Men cameo that has received backlash from some viewers.
Even though many famous actors joined in for Jerry Seinfeld’s story about Pop Tarts, it was unexpected for us to see Don Draper in this way. Nevertheless, here we are.
Just shy of ten years after the final episode of Mad Men aired, Jon Hamm and John Slattery made a surprise appearance in Seinfeld’s latest film (which premiered on Netflix on May 3rd) reprising their beloved roles as Don Draper and Roger Sterling.
The Kellogg’s crew, led by Bob Cabana, receives assistance from a group of sophisticated advertising professionals, as shown in the cameo below:
Despite the highly anticipated return of Hamm and Slattery, there was a mixed reaction among viewers to their mini reunion on one of the most successful TV shows of the past two decades, Mad Men. While some were excited to see the beloved characters back on screen, others were disappointed and had negative reactions to the scene. The disappointment stemmed from the perceived lackluster quality of the show’s return, with many viewers expressing frustration that a critically acclaimed show like Mad Men would have a Rotten Tomatoes score of only 42% for its latest episode, “Unfrosted.”
“One comment on X remarked that it is impressive how in America, one can produce a TV show that is widely considered to be one of the best, featuring intricate characters, captivating plotlines, and poignant themes. However, it is disheartening to see that a decade later, the same show is reduced to a mere marketing tool for breakfast cereal.”
Another person commented: “After a beloved show concludes, its cast should be obligated to sign an agreement stating that they will not portray their characters in commercials or feature films for products such as Mt Dew or Pop Tarts.”
According to a third person, one aspect that often goes unnoticed in Jerry Seinfeld’s complaints about the changes in the movie industry is the fact that he has complete creative control and the financial means to produce any project he desires. This includes his venture into making a low-effort parody film, similar to the Scary Movie franchise.
According to another statement, a truly exceptional show is not truly complete until all those involved continue to mock and depreciate its reputation in the name of unimaginative humor for the remainder of their careers.
Similarly, many were perplexed and ultimately frustrated by the way Netflix handled the scene. It was revealed that prior to the movie’s release, Netflix had been closely monitoring reviewers to avoid any spoilers about the cameo. However, they ended up sharing the clip on the day Unfrosted premiered on their streaming platform, causing many to question their decision.
One X user expressed, “It’s absolutely crazy that they’re offering this on the day the movie is released, when hardly anyone has had the opportunity to see it yet.”
Another person commented, “Was this the surprise cameo that Netflix wanted reviewers to keep under wraps? And now it’s been shared with the world on the day the film came out?”
