Universal Studios Welcomes Harry Potter Fans in Tribute to Maggie Smith’s Legacy

After the announcement on September 27 regarding the passing of the beloved Harry Potter star Dame Maggie Smith, fans of the franchise united to pay tribute to their cherished Professor McGonagall.

Smith passed away at the age of 89, concluding an illustrious career that began in 1956. Renowned for her performances in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter series, she has become the focus of heartfelt tributes from both fans and co-stars alike.

As the stern Professor of Transfiguration in the Harry Potter films, Smith made her first appearance in the opening scene of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Throughout the series, she emerged as a pivotal mentor for Harry and his friends during their time at Hogwarts.

On September 28, fans gathered outside a recreation of Hogwarts Castle at Universal Studios Orlando, raising their wands to honor Smith. This act of remembrance was inspired by a similar gesture in the films after the death of Dumbledore, and has been replicated in real life for other beloved actors, including Michael Gambon and Alan Rickman, who passed away in 2023 and 2016, respectively.

Co-stars from the Harry Potter franchise have also expressed their admiration for Smith, highlighting her immense talent and legendary status.

Daniel Radcliffe, one of the stars of the series, shared: “She was a fierce intellect, a gloriously sharp tongue, could intimidate and charm in the same instant and was, as everyone will tell you, extremely funny.

“I will always consider myself incredibly fortunate to have worked with her and to have spent time with her on set. The term legend is often overused, but if it applies to anyone in our industry, it certainly applies to her. Thank you, Maggie.”

Emma Watson also shared her own tribute on Instagram: “When I was younger, I had no idea of Maggie’s legendary status – the remarkable woman I was fortunate to share space with.

“Only as I have grown older have I come to appreciate that I worked alongside a true definition of greatness. She was genuine, humorous, and self-respecting.

“Maggie, there were many male professors and by God, you held your own. Thank you for all of your kindness. I will miss you dearly.”
