The April Fools Event in Dead Rails introduces exciting new features, including the limited-time game modes, Fool’s Gold and Horsing Around. A standout addition is the Horse Class, available exclusively during this event. Below, discover how to access this unique character class.
Unlocking the Horse Class in Dead Rails

To obtain the Horse Class, you must successfully complete the Horsing Around game mode. Start by navigating to the party creation screen and selecting the Horsing Around option (as shown in the image above). The challenge of this mode can be steep, making it a wise choice to familiarize yourself with the basic mechanics by playing the standard mode first, especially if you’re new to the game.
Completing the Horsing Around Mode
Collaborating with other players can significantly enhance your experience, so consider forming a larger party for this mode. However, if you’re confident, a solo run is a viable option. In the Horsing Around mode, you will start as a horse, equipped with a shovel and a sack yet capable of performing various human functions.

Your objective is straightforward: there’s no train involved, so follow the rail tracks and aim to cover 80 kilometers to reach Mexico while gathering loot and essential equipment. This mode also allows you to undertake the Pony Express challenge, which requires completing the game without utilizing any train. This achievement will unlock upon your victory, as the absence of a train is a central feature of this gameplay.
Tips for Successfully Completing Horsing Around Mode
While completing the run is the primary goal, proficiency, teamwork, and possibly several attempts will be necessary to conquer the Horsing Around mode. Here are some strategic tips to help you unlock the Horse Class:
- Start by selling the Gold Bar and procure a weapon from the Gunsmith. A shotgun serves as an excellent initial choice, with the potential to upgrade to a rifle as your funds improve.
- Securing some armor for your horse body will enhance your durability in combat.
- You can generally outrun most zombies, except for certain powerful enemies like Werewolves. Beware of Runner Zombies, as they match your speed—maintain a safe distance from them.
- While Outlaws can pose a challenge, defeating them can yield beneficial rewards, especially if you’re well-equipped.
- Since horses cannot regenerate health, keep a stash of healing items in your inventory to ensure longevity in battles.
- Navigating nighttime can bring additional challenges; consider these strategies:
- Blood Moon: Avoid Vampires by dodging their attacks—maintain forward momentum while alternating sideways movement (using A & D) to evade.
- Full Moon: For Werewolves, backpedal while striking with your weapon.
- New Moon: Tackle Runner Zombies similarly to how you handle Werewolves.
- Lightning Storm: Seek shelter indoors to evade strikes, or carry a Lightning Rod for protection while running.
- At the final outpost, eliminate the Outlaws and lower the bridge by turning the crank. You can either defend your position inside the stronghold through the night or venture onto the top beam of the bridge to evade combat, but be cautious of falling into the water; this tactic is less effective on a Full Moon when Vampires might reach you.
Equipping the Horse Class and Its Features

After successfully finishing the Horsing Around mode and escaping Mexico with your life, the Horse Class will automatically appear in your character customization interface. To equip this new class, visit the Tailor in the main lobby and select Horse from the available class options.
When playing as a Horse Class character in Dead Rails, you will benefit from increased movement speed, although it’s not as swift as that of the Vampires. Your starting weapon is a shovel, and keep in mind that you don’t regenerate health on your own, making healing items a crucial part of your inventory. Notably, you can equip a Saddle that enables teammates to ride you into the fray. Additionally, you can pull a cart behind you, facilitating the transport of various items to trade stations without hassle.
