Belift Lab’s new girl group ILLIT, under the management of HYBE, made their highly-anticipated debut on March 25th with their title track “Magnetic”. In just their first month since debut, they have taken the music industry by storm, topping all major music charts and achieving a Perfect All-Kill. The group has even made history by breaking the debut records of popular groups NewJeans and BLACKPINK. To add to the buzz surrounding ILLIT, Belift Lab released the music video for their b-side track “Lucky Girl Syndrome”.
Despite embodying the energetic city girl concept and being dubbed the “luckiest girls”, the members of ILLIT faced numerous challenges during the promotion of their song. Unfortunately, unlike their successful track “Magnetic”, their latest release “Lucky Girl Syndrome”failed to climb the charts and ultimately faded into obscurity due to conflicts within HYBE.
On April 22nd, HYBE filed a complaint against ADOR’s CEO Min Hee-jin, alleging that she tried to gain control of the label’s management rights. In response, Min Hee-jin accused HYBE and Bang Si-hyuk of imitating NewJeans’s concept in the creation of ILLIT.
Ever since, ILLIT has been referred to as the “duplicate of NewJeans” . Even before, ILLIT stirred up controversy due to their striking similarities to NewJeans, not only in terms of their group formation and members’ ages, but also their fresh concept. Numerous netizens supported Min Hee-jin’s comments and even shared videos comparing ILLIT and NewJeans. In particular, several parts of ILLIT’s choreography for “Lucky Girl Syndrome”were pointed out to be identical to that of NewJeans.
Despite being a girl group with good songs, pretty visuals and well-planned promotion, ILLIT unfortunately gained the reputation of being the most unlucky group after their debut with the song “Lucky Girl Syndrome”. Suddenly, the group found themselves embroiled in intense controversies within their own company, despite being signed to a major label.
Despite attempts by fans to defend their idols by claiming the use of a shared sample, the issue of plagiarism surrounding “Lucky Girl Syndrome”continued to negatively impact the group’s image. This was due to revelations that certain elements of the song’s melody had been taken from The Wreck’s “Favorite Liar”, resulting in further suspicions and criticism.
One issue that ILLIT continues to struggle with is their singing prowess. Prior to the internal turmoil at HYBE, the group faced severe backlash for their lackluster live performances during encore stages on various music programs.
Although it has only been a month since its establishment, ILLIT has already faced a plethora of challenges, leading to disappointment among its fans. Despite achieving significant accomplishments, the public’s attention has been diverted by HYBE’s controversies, causing ILLIT to be overlooked.
