UnREAL Series Explained: A Must-Watch for Fans and Haters of Reality TV

UnREAL Series Explained: A Must-Watch for Fans and Haters of Reality TV

“Whether you’re a fan of reality TV or someone who considers it the least desirable form of art, UnREAL is a delightful hidden gem that is worth discovering.”

The series offers a chilling glimpse into the inner workings of unsettling television. Its characters border on the demonic, the cutthroat industry it portrays is unforgiving, and the dark humor is reminiscent of Succession.

Despite premiering in 2015 and being canceled in 2018, those who were fortunate enough to watch the show describe it as a captivating trainwreck. And now, it is available for streaming on Netflix.

Despite one’s dislike for reality TV, this TV show about Hollywood is considered one of the best due to its plot and cast.

UnREAL Synopsis

UnREAL follows the lives of reality TV producers as they navigate the behind-the-scenes world of creating a dating competition show.

This show is essentially a satire of The Bachelor, but instead of receiving roses, viewers are exposed to the cutthroat world of overworked producers, manipulative network executives, and scandalous behind-the-scenes tactics to create a false reality.

The primary focus of the series centers on Rachel Goldberg, a producer who is willing to go to extreme lengths to create memorable moments, all while dealing with personal turmoil. She also faces the challenges of working for her ruthless boss, Quinn King.

The show was developed by Marti Noxon, who is best known for her work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sharp Objects, and To the Bone (no need to boast, Marti).

UnREAL is worth watching

The concept of UnREAL alone justifies watching the show. It would still provide valuable insights even if it was poorly made, but fortunately it is well-executed.

Lifetime’s YouTube playlist has lots of insightful videos about UnREAL’s ideas.

The outcome is a blend of clever humor and fittingly dramatic moments that will appeal to fans of The Real Housewives, while also offering a critical examination of the predatory nature of the industry.

Despite the cold and calculated nature of the characters, the series manages to avoid being overly unpleasant due to their occasional charm and personal drama. The talented performances of the two leads are complemented by underlying messages against unethical practices in reality TV, providing a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes world of these shows.

Despite the common belief, the point is not that ‘reality TV is fake’. Instead, the series has a complicated dynamic with the genre, acknowledging its potential to portray authentic narratives and showcase relatable individuals, while also highlighting how reality TV can consume and ultimately discard its stars.

The show’s tagline, “Welcome to the world of bad people making good TV,”perfectly encapsulates its essence. This is evident from the way Rachel, wearing a very 2010s ‘This is what a feminist looks like’ vest top, manipulates female contestants into exposing themselves on camera for more views.

Cast

The UnREAL cast is led by Shiri Appleby and Constance Zimmer.

While mostly working as a director now, Appleby did play the lead role of Rachel in the film. She portrayed a complex character who was not exactly likable, but her intelligence and chaotic nature truly made her stand out.

Even though all the actors delivered exceptional performances, Zimmer stood out as the ultimate scene-stealer. Whenever Quinn entered a room, she commanded all the attention. Zimmer brilliantly portrayed Quinn’s sharp tongue, ruthless tactics, and intricate dynamic with Rachel.

Apart from the primary participants, a revolving group of supporting characters is introduced with each new installment of the make-believe dating series.

The list of UnREal cast members comprises of:

  • Shiri Appleby as Rachel Goldberg
  • Constance Zimmer as Quinn King
  • Craig Bierko as Chet Wilton
  • Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman as Jay Carter
  • Brennan Elliott as Graham
  • Genevieve Buechner as Madison
  • Josh Kellyas Jeremy Caner
  • Adam Demos as August Walker
