Unsatisfied McDonald’s patrons express discontent over significant alteration to beloved McFlurry dessert

A major change to their McFlurries in the US by McDonald’s is beneficial for the environment, but it has caused outrage among some fans.

The modifications involve utilizing a new cardboard packaging that can be folded at the top, eliminating the need for a plastic cup and lid.

The change that has sparked outrage, however, pertains to the beloved hollow plastic spoon, which has, spoiler alert: been eliminated.

Recently, McFlurries in the US have been upgraded to include a wooden spoon, following a similar change that had already been implemented in the UK and Canada. Despite being around for some time, the change was only introduced in the US at the start of September, much to the dismay of fans.

A TikTok, which was posted in August when the changes were initially implemented in Canada, received some negative feedback from McDonald’s enthusiasts in the comments section.

“One user commented that the wooden spoon is a nightmare-inducing object.”

“Another person mentioned that they can’t stand wooden spoons and it makes them cringe. They stated that they keep plastic cutlery in their car instead.”

Many individuals were also pushing the boundaries by expressing a preference to either visit Dairy Queen or create their own homemade flurries.

Although the environmental move is not the only change to the beloved ice cream, there is another difference that should be noted. The previous McFlurry spoons (the familiar hollow ones) also served as kitchen utensils and could be attached to the ice cream mixer to ensure that the toppings were evenly distributed throughout the McFlurry.

From now on, the toppings for McFlurry will be placed directly on top of the ice cream, requiring you to use the wooden spoon and prepare it yourself.

Despite potentially upsetting its fans, McDonald’s is standing by this change.

According to Michael Gonda, SVP and Chief Impact Officer of McDonald’s North America, packaging updates such as this are significant. In a statement, he expressed that the mini McFlurry and its sustainable cups not only provide a fun new experience for American customers, but also bring the company closer to meeting its packaging and waste goals.

Additionally, not only do these changes have positive effects on the environment, they also have a silver lining. The introduction of mini-sized McFlurries in the US will mirror the trend seen in the UK and Europe.

These smaller McFlurries are less expensive, contain an equal amount of toppings with a reduced amount of soft-serve, and are great for a quick and light treat.

There is speculation that the beloved McFlurry containers, which have been discontinued, may be returning to the menu in the near future.
