“Unusual” Netflix Announcement Puts 3 Body Problem at Risk

While the news of 3 Body Problem’s renewal for Season 2 has brought joy to fans, the official announcement from Netflix has left some concerned about its implications.

On May 15, 2024, it was announced that the sci-fi series would be renewed for a second season following its initial end in March. However, some fans are worried that this could also mark the end of the series.

Some viewers on Reddit compared the recent announcement about the renewal of the show to the situation with Sense8, as Netflix did not refer to it as a second season and did not specify the number of episodes or seasons that will be ordered. The showrunners had initially aimed for four seasons to cover the three books in Liu’s trilogy.

Despite its popularity among fans, the 3 Body Problem did not meet expectations despite making it onto the Top 10 list. One fan speculates that the series may receive a similar fate as the 2015 series Sense8.

“After two seasons, Sense8 was canceled, but the creators were granted a 2-hour movie to tie up loose ends. The OA also faced cancellation after season 2, but the creators declined a similar offer, stating that they could not adequately conclude the story in such a short amount of time. It seems that the commenter is suggesting that 3BP will also receive a wrap-up movie.”

The motivation behind producing a 2-hour movie following Sense8’s cancellation was a result of intense criticism from fans on the internet, specifically because the show had ended on a cliffhanger that required resolution.

If this statement holds true, creator David Benioff’s hopes of seeing the series span over multiple seasons will not come to fruition. The 3 Body Problem possesses a multitude of narratives that can be explored, as Liu Cixin’s original work spans across three installments.

Variety also noted the unique way in which Netflix made the announcement, suggesting that the absence of labeling the news as “Season 2″could indicate that Netflix has ordered additional episodes rather than a full season. In the press release, Benioff stated that they will have the opportunity to “tell this story through to its epic conclusion,”possibly indicating that this new installment could be the final one.

Nonetheless, the streaming platform is expected to release an official statement with further information at a later time.

You can now stream 3 Body Problem on Netflix to catch up on whether the humans were able to defeat the San-Ti and to understand the significance of the countdown in the series.
