Netflix has taken on the challenge of creating a Bioshock movie, fulfilling the long-held desire of fans of the game. Here is what we currently know about the status of the project.
Those familiar with the Bioshock games are aware that the murky depths of Rapture and the politically-charged skies of Columbia create a multifaceted and somewhat sadistic setting.
Despite having three games already released and a fourth one in development, there is still much untapped lore to explore in Bioshock. Previous attempts to adapt the series for television have been unsuccessful, but hopefully this new movie will be able to succeed where others have failed.
In recent times, we have witnessed several streaming services achieve success with shows such as The Last of Us and Fallout. Therefore, let’s see if the Bioshock movie can also continue this trend.
Does the Bioshock Movie Have a Release Date?
The movie is currently in development and there is no current release date. It may still be a few years before it is released.
We may need to wait until the new game is released before the Netflix movie can fully move forward. However, the film is making steady progress.
During an interview with Collider, writer Michael Green stated that the project is progressing as planned following the Writers Strike. He also mentioned that Netflix is enthusiastic about the project and that he has been regularly meeting with director Francis Lawrence to work on refining the script.
Despite ongoing work on the script, the Bioshock movie is not expected to be completed for several years. Our projected timeline is currently 2026 at the earliest, although it may even extend to 2027.
Bioshock Movie Plot and Setting Rumors
Based on the promotional artwork released for the movie thus far, it appears that the film will take us back to Rapture, the iconic setting from the first two games.
The promotional material for the movie only includes one picture, which showcases the game’s Big Daddy enemy alongside a Little Sister. The featured Big Daddy is similar to those seen in the first game, rather than the alternate versions introduced in Bioshock 2.
It will be intriguing to observe the level of fidelity the movie will maintain to the source material. The original plot follows the journey of a man named Jack who unexpectedly discovers Rapture and must fight his way through the unsettling sights, sounds, and unimaginable terrors of a decaying, dystopian metropolis.
Despite this, it is clear that director Lawrence remains dedicated to staying true to the original source material. In an interview with Collider, he expressed his admiration for the game, stating that it is one of the greatest ever created and stands out for its unique visual style. He also noted the thematic elements of the game, which have always appealed to him.
“The game property is built upon concrete ideas and philosophies, with a meticulous level of thought put into it. The combination of these ideas and philosophies, paired with the captivating aesthetic, makes it truly exceptional.”
Lawrence also discussed how the game defies categorization, blending elements from multiple genres. “Another aspect I appreciate is the unique combination of period drama, body horror, and science fiction.”
“This is an exceptional combination, which has the potential to be distinctive, stunning, and highly enjoyable.”
In an interview, Lawrence addressed the dark and gruesome elements of Bioshock and assured fans that the film will not be compromised by Netflix’s demands. He also mentioned that he and his team are collaborating closely with Take-Two Interactive and Ken Levine, the original creator of the game.
Who’s in the cast?
The cast for the movie has yet to be announced. However, we do have information on the movie’s writer and director, with Michael Green and Francis Lawrence currently attached.
Francis Lawrence, known for directing I Am Legend and several Hunger Games films, has been confirmed as the director for this project. With a proven track record of successfully portraying intense, morally ambiguous dystopian settings, Lawrence is a perfect fit for this endeavor.

Is there a trailer for the Bioshock movie?
Despite Netflix not having released a trailer for Bioshock yet, the movie has not yet begun filming.
Once production is running smoothly, anticipate Netflix to release a subtle sneak peek for the Bioshock movie. The streaming platform typically unveils a more official trailer closer to the eventual release date.
