The Boyfriend, Netflix’s popular same-sex dating show, has been a unexpected success and has left fans eager for more. The good news is that more episodes are on the way and will be released in just a few days.
Releasing in early July on the streaming service, The Boyfriend is a Japanese reality dating TV show that follows nine male contestants living in a villa for the summer. Their goal: to successfully run a coffee truck and find a boyfriend before their time in the villa is up.
Despite the familiarity of the basic format (hello, Love Island), Netflix users have been eagerly anticipating more content since its conclusion. Fortunately, there is good news on the horizon as a ‘bonus episode’ is set to arrive on the platform on August 3rd.
In line with previous classic dating shows, the extra episode will consist of a reunion, updating viewers on the events that have transpired since the cast wrapped up filming the show.

Even prior to the airing of the reunion, which is still unknown what secrets will be revealed, The Boyfriend was a hit among reality TV enthusiasts.
One fan urged others to watch The Boyfriend on Netflix, expressing their enthusiasm by *slamming* their hands on the table. Another fan concurred, sharing that the Japanese gay dating show has made it to the top 10 shows on Netflix in the Philippines.
“I was genuinely emotional as each of the boys departed from the Green House in the final episode.”
The Green House, which was prominently featured in the original series, served as a diary room for contestants to openly discuss their developing crushes within the villa.
“According to one fan, Netflix Japan’s THE BOYFRIEND is a refreshing watch. They noted that in the West, gay men are often portrayed as aggressive, but in Japan, the gradual development of a romantic relationship and the restrained yet deeply emotional expressions of the characters are truly beautiful to see.”
Critics have also showered the show with praise, with The Review Geek bestowing it with the title of one of the top reality dating shows of 2024.
According to Louis Staples at the BBC, the series has been praised for its portrayal of gay relationships as “wholesome”and for its ability to capture their nuances.
