<p>Just in time for Halloween, we have some exciting news: Lionsgate, the studio renowned for producing the Saw franchise, is moving forward with a feature film adaptation of the iconic horror video game Outlast.
In recent years, there has been a surge of both big and small-screen adaptations of video games, including well-known titles like Fallout, The Last of Us, The Super Mario Bros., and Sonic. The possibility of an Outlast movie has been widely discussed among fans.
Finally, after much speculation, we have a definitive development. This announcement by Lionsgate marks a significant moment for both horror enthusiasts and gaming aficionados, promising to capture the game’s terrifying essence for audiences in cinemas.
Ample spooky material to explore
According to a report by Bloody Disgusting, the horror film producer Roy Lee, known for his work on Death Note, Barbarian, and Strange Darling, will take the lead on this project. Meanwhile, writer J.T. Petty, who has played an integral role in shaping the narratives of the Outlast games, is set to craft the screenplay.
Petty expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Red Barrels has been pushing the boundaries of horror in gaming for over a decade, and the chance to expand the Outlast Universe into film is a fantastic opportunity to explore the characters and villains we’ve come to love,” as reported by the outlet.
Lee also shared his thoughts, saying, “When Outlast debuted in 2012, it revolutionized horror gaming and established a new benchmark for immersion in the genre. Its profound and evolving lore provides an excellent basis for a film that examines the psychological and physical terrors inherent to the franchise. I’m thrilled to bring this extraordinary world to life for both newcomers and long-time fans of the series.”
The team at Red Barrels shares this excitement, with co-founder and creative director David Chateauneuf commenting, “As fervent admirers of horror across various media, we at Red Barrels hold Roy Lee and Lionsgate’s work in high regard. Horror films, both classic and contemporary, have significantly influenced our franchise through the years, and now having the chance to collaborate on an Outlast movie with true horror legends is a dream— or perhaps a nightmare— made real.”
