Upcoming Smash Bros-Style Battle Royale: What You Need to Know About the Major Catch

The developers of Omega Strikers have announced a new title, which is effectively a battle royale version of Super Smash Bros, though its release remains uncertain.

Odyssey Interactive, who concluded their work on Omega Strikers in late 2023, introduced a game called Byte Breakers. This innovative title blends platform fighting with battle royale mechanics, making it a distinctive addition to the fighting game genre.

Dubbed a “Smash battle royale” by the developers, Byte Breakers features a vast map and showcases gameplay in a trailer released on September 11.

“Creating a platform fighter is intimidating. You’re always going to be compared to one of the greatest gaming series ever,” said Dax Andrus, one of the studio’s founders, in a video interview.

“However, that’s thrilling for us. We’re not trying to surpass Smash; we aim to build on the evolution of the genre that started when we were young.”

However, the catch is that Byte Breakers is still in its prototype stage, and there’s a possibility it may not be fully released if players don’t show enough interest. The developers plan to invite a few thousand players to test Byte Breakers shortly and have expressed their willingness to “go next” if the game doesn’t resonate.

“We may not even proceed with this prototype. We might not develop the next prototype we present to you, either. But we believe public testing is the best way to determine if our concepts have potential,” Andrus mentioned.

The approach of gauging interest in a game during its early stages isn’t entirely new. However, the idea of publicly stating that the project could be scrapped if it fails to attract interest—rather than simply tweaking gameplay based on feedback—is an innovative strategy.

Ultimately, players will have the power to decide for Odyssey Interactive whether to continue developing this Super Smash Bros-inspired battle royale or redirect their efforts to another project.
