Update: Donald Trump unbanned on Twitch after three years

After being suspended from the Amazon-owned platform for almost three and a half years, Donald Trump has now been unbanned on Twitch.

On January 6, 2021, a significant number of individuals gathered to protest both outside and inside the United States Capitol building, in reaction to the outcome of the 2020 Presidential Election. These demonstrations ultimately led to the loss of five lives.

The Republican candidate in that election, Donald Trump, faced heavy criticism for inciting the protest. As a consequence, platforms such as Twitch and Twitter took action to remove the politician’s accounts from their websites just a few weeks later.

On July 19, 2024, Twitch lifted the ban on Donald Trump’s account, which had been in place for three years, five months, and four weeks.

Journalist Rod ‘Slasher’ Breslau was informed by Twitch that his account would remain suspended due to his involvement in the 2024 election, according to a comment he received from the platform.

The decision was made to restore former President Trump’s channel. It is our belief that it is beneficial to hear from Presidential nominees directly, whenever feasible. As Trump is now the official Republican nominee for US president, this reinstatement holds even more significance.

According to Twitchtracker, as of January 4, 2021, Donald Trump’s Twitch account has over 150,000 followers. However, due to the delay in updating the channel’s follower count, it currently only shows 222 followers.

Just one month following his acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion in November 2022, Elon Musk lifted the ban on former president Trump from the platform.

According to CNN, after conducting a poll on his account, Musk reinstated Trump’s account based on the majority vote of 15 million users, with 51.2% in favor of the reinstatement.

Since being unbanned, he has only made one post, which was a photo of his mugshot accompanied by a link to his website. The former president has chosen to make Truth Social his main platform for sharing his thoughts.

In addition to Trump, Elon Musk also unbanned influencer Andrew Tate on November 18, 2024. Tate, who had been suspended in 2017 for hate speech, was now allowed back on Twitter, which had since been renamed X.
