On Friday, October 11, 2024, the anime film The Colors Within officially revealed its release date for theaters in the United States, set for January 24, 2025. While this announcement was made, other international release dates were not provided at this time. The film is, however, confirmed for release during Winter 2024 in regions including North America, Latin America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
This information was shared through an English-subtitled trailer for The Colors Within, a production of Science SARU under the direction of Naoko Yamada. It had its debut in Japanese theaters on August 30, 2024, initially scheduled for release in Fall 2023 but postponed to 2024.

The newly released English-subtitled trailer highlights the film’s three main characters, illustrating their journey of forming a band while navigating the challenges of school, family, and personal struggles. Although the narrative primarily centers on Totsuko Higurashi, Kimi Sakunaga and Rui Kagehira also feature prominently. GKIDS has also announced that an English dub will be available for the film.
As previously mentioned, The Colors Within has international screening confirmations for several regions. GKIDS will oversee the film’s release in nearly all these areas, except for Europe. In Europe, the distribution will be managed by PLAION PICTURES for Italian- and German-speaking audiences, while CHARADES will cover the rest of Europe along with Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand in conjunction with GKIDS.
Currently, the film is still showing in Japan, where it is featured in 51 IMAX theaters. Within its first three days of release in Japanese cinemas, it grossed an impressive 97,739,500 yen (approximately $680,200 USD). Additionally, a manga adaptation of this film was launched by Sanami Suzuki on Kadokawa’s Comic Newtype platform as of July 16. The film is produced by Science SARU with Naoko Yamada at the helm, and Story Inc. credited as the planner and producer.
Reiko Yoshida penned the screenplay while Kensuke Ushio composed the soundtrack. The original character design was created by Daisuke Richard, with Takashi Kojima responsible for the character designs as well as directing the animation. The theme song for the film, titled “in the pocket,” is performed by Mr. Children. The film made its premiere at the Annecy International Film Festival in June 2024 and won the Best Animation Film award at the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival the same month.
The Colors Within tells the story of Totsuko, a high school student at a mission school in Nagasaki who possesses the unique ability to perceive the “colors” of emotions within people. To shield her friends and family from dark feelings, she goes to great lengths, even resorting to lies, to ensure their happiness. Her journey takes a turning point when she encounters Kimi and Rui at an antique bookstore, leading them to form a band together.
