The previous episode kicked off with Kirie heading to Kurouzu train station to meet her boyfriend, Shuichi, who was returning from school. While walking together, Shuichi expressed a desire to escape, overwhelmed by the spirals that seem to plague their town. He recounted his father, Toshio’s obsession with spirals, which Kirie found hard to take seriously.
Toshio’s fixation led him to order a custom-designed round tub. In an astonishing incident, he managed to contort himself into a spiral shape within it, resulting in his tragic death, although his family attributed it to a fall.
At his cremation, black clouds emerged in a spiral and formed his face in the sky, before settling over Dragonfly Pond—a sight that traumatized Shuichi’s mother, who subsequently had to be hospitalized. Suffering from a phobia, she concealed anything resembling spirals, but paradoxically cut off her own fingertips, tormented by the spiral pattern of her fingerprints.
The episode also illustrated events when Kirie introduced her friend Azami to Shuichi; he panic-stricken grasped Kirie’s hand and fled due to sensing a spiral link to Azami. Her crescent-shaped forehead scar drew attention, and after being rejected by Shuichi, Azami became obsessed, her scar spiraling in growth until it consumed her and ensnared a would-be admirer.
Additionally, the storyline included Takayama, a slow student who attended classes only during rainy days, arriving drenched. He faced constant bullying, and during one incident, a spiral-shaped growth was discovered on his back when others stripped him.
