The Ongoing Battle Against Cheating in Call of Duty
Recently, a prominent analyst from Riot Games, who specializes in the company’s anti-cheat software known as Vanguard, shared valuable insights regarding Activision’s ongoing struggle with hacking in the Call of Duty franchise. Despite their efforts, particularly through the Ricochet anti-cheat system, significant challenges remain.
The Current State of Cheating in Call of Duty
Following the recent launch of Black Ops 6 and its Ranked Play mode, the prevalence of cheating has dramatically escalated. Gamers report a frustrating experience, where finding an untainted match in the upper ranks seems nearly impossible. This issue is particularly rampant in Warzone, causing disruption across the community.
Despite Activision’s announcement of a ban wave that targeted 19,000 accounts, players have noted little to no improvement, leading many to abandon the game entirely.
Insights from Riot Games’ Vanguard Analyst
The analyst emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in how Activision approaches anti-cheat measures. They posited that a heavy reliance on AI technologies is not effectively addressing the core issues of cheating. Instead, they advocate for a more direct approach aimed specifically at identifying cheats.

Addressing Concerns of Balance in Competitive Play
The analyst also voiced concerns regarding the mandatory crossplay feature for console players. They believe that this requirement can create an uneven competitive landscape, as console users are unable to disable crossplay in Ranked modes. This situation compromises competitive integrity, particularly for players who strive for a fair gaming environment.
“If crossplay is going to be required, perhaps enforcing certain Windows security features at a level comparable to Xbox or PlayStation would help create a more fair and balanced playing field for those who care about competitive integrity,” the analyst explained.
Future Directions for Anti-Cheat Mechanisms
As the discussion about effective anti-cheat systems continues among developers and players alike, the Riot analyst concluded that when cheating adversely impacts top players and undermines the competitive ecosystem, it may be time for a comprehensive reevaluation of the strategies employed.
While initial concerns regarding privacy implications of kernel-level anti-cheat solutions were raised, Vanguard’s effectiveness in combating hackers has made a compelling case for revisiting such tactics in the Call of Duty context.
As the gaming community eagerly awaits a resolution, Activision’s next moves will be critical in restoring player confidence and competitive fairness. The call for change is growing louder, and the gaming ecosystem is certainly hoping for significant improvements in the fight against cheating.
