The recent changes to the map pool in Patch 9.08 have left Valorant players feeling confused. Despite the return of Pearl and Split without any alterations, Ascent is still included in the pool.
In regards to the map pool in Valorant, the topic has always been controversial as certain beloved maps are taken out while others appear to be permanent fixtures.
On July 30, the developers announced that they will be reintroducing Split and Pearl without any modifications. This decision has caused confusion among players as Icebox and Lotus will be removed from the game.

One of the initial concerns raised by players was the reasoning behind keeping Ascent in the pool. With the recent removal of Lotus, Ascent now holds the distinction of being the only map to have never been taken out of the map pool.
Ascent has been a contentious map due to its established meta, which often includes a comp consisting of Killjoy, Sova, Jett, Omen, and KAY/O. This has resulted in many labeling it as “boring”.
“VCT analyst Sean Gares questioned whether Ascent is permanently programmed into the game, making it impossible to remove. This was in reference to the upcoming map pool.”
“It seems that Riot’s intention is for us to dislike Ascent. The purpose of map rotation is to provide variety and excitement, yet the same stale map has been in rotation for three years,”sarcastically remarked Fnatic’s Strategic coach in response to a tweet.
The last remaining logical conclusion is that Riot actually *wants* us to hate Ascent. The whole point of a map rotation is to keep things fresh and exciting, not leave the quantifiably stalest map in the game in rotation for 3 years. 🙃 https://t.co/LY9XHxvVkB

Some were curious about the whereabouts of Fracture. The last time Fracture was seen was before Patch 7.04 on August 29, 2023. With Pearl’s return, this marks the longest period of time a map has been out of rotation.
“Despite Fracture being the expected choice, for some reason Ascent remains in the map rotation and continues to have the most unexciting meta. DarkZero’s Wedid expressed their thoughts on the changes, stating that this is epic.”
The current map pool will be seen for the last time at Valorant Champions 2024, as Patch 9.08 is scheduled to be released sometime in October.
