Venom 3 marks the concluding chapter for Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and his intertwined partner, Venom, offering an emotional farewell that resonates deeply with fans of the franchise. (Note: Warning for significant spoilers ahead.)
After the completion of three films, the tumultuous dynamic between Eddie and Venom reaches its end. They have battled formidable foes including Riot, Carnage, and the latest threat, Knull, each of whom sought to unleash symbiote chaos upon Earth.
As the Sony Marvel saga wraps up, numerous questions linger. Will Venom find a place in future Spider-Man stories? Can we expect Knull’s return as a villain in upcoming Marvel films?
For now, the future of the Venom universe hangs in suspense. Here’s a breakdown of the ending of Venom: The Last Dance.
The Climax Takes Place at Area 51
The climax of Venom 3 unfolds with Eddie and Venom being captured by scientists at Area 51. General Strickland is intent on killing Eddie to stop Knull from obtaining the Codex key.
To provide some context: the primary antagonist of the film is Knull, who is imprisoned in space and eagerly waiting for the Xenophage to seize Venom in his authentic form to secure the Codex key. This key is critical for Knull’s escape, thus he has relentlessly pursued Eddie and Venom throughout the film.
The only means of destroying the Codex key entails the demise of either Eddie or Venom, thereby severing their bond and annihilating it completely. Upon discovering this, Strickland invades the research lab, seizing Eddie and shooting him in the presence of scientists Dr. Payne and “Christmas.”
Fortunately, Venom has managed to link with Christmas in secrecy, allowing him to bond with Eddie and rescue him just in time. However, this has the unintended consequence of attracting the Xenophage’s attention. The creature crashes into the room, forcing everyone to flee to the main lab housing the other symbiotes.
On Venom’s instruction, the team is told to release the other symbiotes. Although a security guard loses his life, the remaining symbiotes bond with him and various scientists (including Christmas), giving rise to new Venom-like entities.
They collectively lure the Xenophage to the surface, igniting an explosive showdown involving the Xenophage, the symbiotes, and the military.
Eddie Emerges as the Hero in Venom 3
As chaos erupts, Martin and his family have stealthily infiltrated the base and are observing from an upper watchtower. Eddie spots them and rushes up, confessing that he is host to an alien lifeform. Amid the turmoil below, the watchtower crumbles, sending the family plummeting.
Eddie transforms into Venom and swoops in to save them, depositing them into Dr. Payne’s truck for a hasty escape. Meanwhile, the symbiotes continue their fierce battle against the Xenophage, which escalates further as more portals open, releasing additional Xenophages into the fray.
Eddie commandeers a motorcycle, summoning Venom to fully manifest in order to divert the Xenophages. During the skirmish, Strickland gets injured, alongside many other symbiotes, leaving only Eddie/Venom and Christmas in the fray. Just as Eddie appears to be on the brink of death, Martin arrives with a rocket launcher, targeting one of the Xenophages and saving him in the nick of time.
The Fate of Eddie and Venom: Who Perishes?
Seizing the moment to escape, Eddie and Venom hide out in a van. As Venom surveys the carnage, he reaches a sobering conclusion: One of them must perish, and it must be Venom.
Eddie and Venom share a heartfelt farewell, both believing they may not survive this ordeal. Venom morphs to attract the Xenophages before heading toward the acid tanks utilized by the military to eradicate equipment. In a selfless act, he hurls Eddie to safety and covers him with a metal door for protection.
Strickland ascends the control panel and activates the machinery, unleashing acid upon Venom and the Xenophages. Dr. Payne and Christmas scramble to escape the deadly sprays and falling symbiote remnants.
Strickland then tosses a grenade into the tank, resulting in a monumental explosion of black sludge and acid, ultimately costing him his life.
Dr. Payne and Christmas narrowly escape, with Dr. Payne breaking a vial of symbiotic substance to transform herself in a bid to save Christmas, adopting a look strikingly similar to Agony. As all this transpires, Eddie loses consciousness.
Eddie’s Journey to New York
The closing scene of The Last Dance depicts Eddie, now disentangled from Venom and the chaotic symbiotic fallout, awakening in a hospital. A government representative informs him that he has been exonerated of Mulligan’s murder and is free to reclaim his life—on the condition that he remains silent about his extraordinary experiences.
Ultimately, we see Eddie, now liberated, navigating the bustling streets of New York City. Accompanied by a montage showcasing his journey with Venom, set to Maroon 5’s ‘Memories’, he arrives at the waterfront, gazing at the Statue of Liberty, fulfilling the promise he made to Venom to visit the iconic site.
Venom: The Last Dance is currently screening in theaters.
