Venom 3 hits theaters this week, yet Eddie Brock’s original romantic interest seems to be missing in The Last Dance. Here’s the explanation provided by director Kelly Marcel.
“The Last Dance serves as a conclusion for this version of Eddie Brock and his extraterrestrial counterpart. As a result, the film aims to deliver both intense action and emotional resonance. While it accomplishes some of this, it falls short of making Venom a truly cohesive trilogy with an impactful conclusion,” Marcel stated.
One notable absence is a character who was significant in the first two installments. Thanks to new insights from the film’s co-writer and director, we now understand the reasons behind her exclusion.
When questioned by The Hollywood Reporter about Michelle Williams’ character Anne not being included, Kelly Marcel revealed that this new project focuses on Eddie Brock and Venom exploring independence.
“Our goal was to create distance between them,” Marcel noted. “We aimed to extract them from their safe spaces, removing all familiarity, leaving them to entirely depend on one another.”
“We intended for them to achieve a deeper understanding and commitment to being Lethal Protectors, embarking on this journey together. However, this quickly leads to peril, as their union poses a significant threat to the world,” she added.
Marcel elaborates: “They gradually realize that the choice they’ve made might ultimately lead to their ruin, which is why characters from prior films—aside from Peggy Lu’s Mrs. Chen—didn’t fit this road trip narrative.”
This explains Michelle Williams’ absence in Venom 3. With Marcel confirming in the same conversation that this truly marks the “last dance” for both her and Tom Hardy in the Venom franchise, it seems Venom 2 was the final chapter for Anne.
