We’ve reached a significant turning point for Eddie and Venom in Venom: The Last Dance, but the post-credits sequences hint at Knull’s potential comeback. (Warning: spoilers lie ahead!)
The anticipation surrounding Venom: The Last Dance was largely fueled by the highly awaited introduction of Knull. Known as the King in Black, Knull plays a pivotal role as a supervillain within the Venom saga, elevating the narrative stakes for Eddie and his symbiotic partner.
Despite the excitement, Knull’s on-screen presence in the film is rather brief, serving more as a teaser than a fully fleshed-out character. Nevertheless, the two post-credits scenes in Venom 3 suggest possible future symbiote stories involving Knull.
Let’s delve into the details of the post-credits scenes from Venom 3 and their implications for Marvel’s future.
Are there post-credits scenes in Venom 3?
Yes, there is one mid-credits scene and one post-credits scene in Venom: The Last Dance. One involves Knull announcing his intentions to return, while the other features Cristo Fernández’s character stumbling out from the wreckage of Area 51.
Clearly, one of these sequences carries more weight than the other, yet both imply that this universe still has narratives to explore, even though the bond between Venom and Eddie has reached its conclusion.
Understanding the mid-credits scene
In the mid-credits scene, we find Knull seated on his throne delivering a chilling monologue, declaring his imminent return to “annihilate” our world.
He ominously states that “the King in Black is awake,” proclaiming that “everyone will burn.” As he lifts his head, we catch our first glimpse of his face.
Though he narrowly missed his chance to escape this time, it’s evident that this isn’t the end for him. Overall, Knull’s limited exposure in Venom 3 serves primarily as a setup for his character rather than a definitive reveal.
This effectively alludes to the ‘King in Black’ storyline from the comics, where Knull, alongside his symbiotes, launches an invasion of Earth, necessitating the cooperation of Eddie, the Avengers, and the X-Men to thwart them.
While it’s probable that this storyline won’t come to fruition right away—given Eddie Brock’s newfound freedom and the Avengers’ impending battles with Doctor Doom—it leaves open the possibility for Knull’s entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or at least other Sony Spider-Man adventures.
Director Kelly Marcel emphasized this, stating that “[Knull] is a massive, massive character, so you can never be one-and-done with him. This is just a little introduction to Knull. What the future holds for him, who knows” [via Variety].
Breaking down the post-credits scene
The post-credits scene reveals the barman from earlier in the film, staggering out into the aftermath of Area 51’s destruction.
Previously, he had been seized by Strickland and his crew while pursuing Eddie and Venom. As he calls for help in the desert, a cockroach scuttles over to debris, notably a shattered vial containing symbiotic material.
This scene has already been labeled as “the most bizarre end credit scene in a superhero film,” as it lacks substantial purpose. However, it teases the emergence of additional symbiote-centered narratives in the future, even those not directly involving Venom and Eddie.
In Venom 3, we witnessed various other symbiotes, including those that fused with characters like Dr. Payne and “Christmas.” Although not all survived, a few remained, potentially including Agony.
Marcel remarked, “While Eddie and Venom’s storyline wraps up here, there are countless symbiote tales in the canon. There are multiple directions to explore, and perhaps this film includes some Easter eggs that hint at future adventures.”
Given the presence of symbiote samples among the wreckage at Area 51, it seems plausible that Sony’s Marvel universe could broaden its horizons with Knull and other symbiotes in forthcoming projects, as there are many to draw from.
