Vince McMahon Critiques “Misleading” Netflix Documentary, Resulting in Contradictory Public Reaction

Ahead of the premiere of Netflix’s Mr. McMahon, Vince McMahon has openly criticized the documentary series, deeming it “deceptive” —yet his remarks seem to have backfired.

This upcoming documentary, produced by Bill Simmons alongside Tiger King‘s Chris Smith, will explore the tumultuous journey of McMahon, co-founder and former CEO of WWE.

According to Smith, the original concept of the Netflix docu-series aimed to peel back the layers of the infamous figure’s larger-than-life persona. However, he noted that “over the four years of production, the story evolved in truly shocking ways, culminating in some extremely harrowing allegations.”

These allegations include serious accusations of sexual misconduct, trafficking, and assault, which ultimately led to McMahon’s resignation from WWE.

Vince McMahon Slams “Deceptive” Netflix Documentary Series

The documentary series is set to launch on Netflix this week (Wednesday, September 25). McMahon shared a statement on social media, targeting both the streaming service and the series producers.

“I don’t regret participating in this Netflix documentary. The producers had an opportunity to present an objective story about my life and the remarkable business I built, teeming with excitement, drama, fun, and a fair share of controversy and life lessons,” he commented.

“Regrettably, based on an early partial cut I’ve seen, this documentary falls short and takes the anticipated route of blurring the line between Mr. McMahon’s character and my true identity as Vince. The title and promos alone illustrate this clearly.”

McMahon asserts that “much has been misrepresented or omitted entirely to intentionally confuse viewers,” accusing the producers of employing “standard editing tactics, including out-of-context footage and dated soundbites to skew the viewers’ understanding and bolster a misleading narrative.”

“In a bid to further their distorted account, the producers utilize a lawsuit stemming from an ended affair as proof that I embody ‘Mr. McMahon.’ I hope viewers will approach this with an open mind and remember that every story has two sides.”

WWE Fans Are Even More Curious About Mr. McMahon Now

The statement circulated on Reddit where many wrestling fans shared a consensus: if McMahon disapproves, the series must be worth a watch.

“Ironically, Vince’s lack of enthusiasm and his statement may actually serve as the best promotion for the series,” one user remarked, a sentiment that resonated with many.

“I’m intrigued now that Vince is publically distancing himself from it,” another wrote, while a third commenter said: “The claims of it being devastating for Vince must hold some truth.”

Interestingly, starting January 2025, Netflix will begin airing WWE’s weekly Raw show. There were initial concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest; would Netflix really undermine an entertainment titan just as they acquired it?

Nevertheless, McMahon’s statement indicates that Netflix hasn’t sanitized his story or the serious allegations surrounding him.

“Honestly, I didn’t anticipate it to be that severe. It’s on Netflix, produced by Simmons (who has a partnership with WWE), and the trailer featured many who spoke highly of Vince (like The Rock, Prichard, etc.),” one user pointed out.

“But now that Vince issued a statement? That certainly shifted my perspective. They must have covered more than the typical elements found in productions like Dark Side of the Ring.
