Annual Teddy Bear Toss Takes an Unexpected Turn
The highly anticipated annual teddy bear toss event turned into an unexpected spectacle when a brawl erupted between the Ottawa 67’s and the Barrie Colts during their game on December 8. What is usually a heartwarming charitable event spiraled into chaos, with even a guest character, the Grinch, becoming embroiled in the turmoil.
Game Highlights and the Official Toss
The Ottawa 67’s hosted the teddy bear toss at the TD Place Arena, attracting a full house of enthusiastic fans eager to donate plush toys. The tradition dictates that the teddy bears would be tossed onto the ice following the team’s first goal. Anticipation built until midway through the second period when Luca Pinelli scored with a powerful one-timer, signaling the moment everyone had been waiting for.
On-Ice Brawl Overshadows Celebration
As thousands of teddy bears rained down onto the ice, the atmosphere quickly shifted from festive celebration to confrontation. Players from both teams engaged in a series of heated skirmishes, defiantly exchanging punches even as soft toys filled the rink. The Grinch, embodying the chaotic spirit, disrupted play by pretending to officiate the brawl as Pinneli confronted Barrie’s Eliasson.

Penalties Foul the Event’s Spirit
In reaction to the fracas, referees issued a total of ten penalties affecting five players. Notably, Barrie’s Ben Eliasson and Dalyn Wakely, along with Ottawa’s Luca Pinelli and Brady Foster, received misconduct penalties. Despite the fray, Colts captain Beau Jelsma managed to walk away with a mere minor penalty for roughing.
Festive Spirit Remains Strong
Despite the on-ice drama, fans continued to support the cause by donating numerous stuffed animals. Attendees also purchased new bears from charity vendors stationed throughout the arena, underscoring the spirit of giving this holiday season. All contributions benefited the Children’s Miracle Network, which provides vital support to sick children treated at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).
