Viral Moment: Developer’s Heartwarming In-Game Proposal Captivates Players

In a captivating blend of creativity and romance, game developer Shane Canning recently proposed to his partner in an extraordinary way. He ingeniously incorporated the proposal into a yet-to-be-released game, astonishing his beloved in the process.

Canning has been dedicated to developing KEMURI, the inaugural title from the independent Japanese studio UNSEEN. You might recognize the studio’s CEO, Ikumi Nakamura, who gained popularity for her charming gestures during her appearance at The Game Awards.

Although KEMURI is still in its early developmental phase, Canning devised a unique approach to his level design: he meticulously crafted an area within the game and integrated non-player characters (NPCs) to facilitate a memorable proposal.

KEMURI is shaping up to be an adventure game where players take on the role of a Yokai Hunter. While not inherently a romantic title, Canning transformed it into something special for this momentous occasion.

A Love Story: Game Developer Proposes with an In-Game Twist

Completely unaware of the impending surprise, Makiko sat down to “playtest” the demo, under the pretense of providing feedback for developers. Her experience soon took an unexpected turn as she encountered a pivotal NPC that was destined to alter her life.

Meanwhile, team members from various departments discreetly gathered in the background, eager to witness the enchanting event unfold.

“She’s giving me something,” Makiko exclaimed upon interacting with the cleverly positioned NPC, which was animated to toss an item toward the screen. At that moment, Canning seized a real-world ring from behind the scenes, dropping to one knee to unveil the engagement ring to his partner.

“What does this mean?” a bewildered Makiko questioned. “I will love you forever,” Canning replied tenderly.

With excitement filling the room, he asked, “Will you marry me?” in front of the entire studio. “Of course!” she joyously responded, coinciding with an explosion of in-game fireworks celebrating their newfound engagement.

Wrapping up the beautiful moment, Nakamura, the studio’s CEO, revealed, “Shane was working on this; that’s why he was coming home late.” It’s clear that the late-night efforts were worthwhile, culminating in a seamless proposal that has left the couple happily engaged.
