A viral moment emerged during an NBA game as a Charlotte Hornets fan received a PS5 in front of the audience, only for the team to abruptly reclaim it shortly after. This incident has sparked significant discussion across social media platforms, especially with the holiday season nearing.
With Christmas just around the corner, many individuals and families are in the spirit of giving and receiving gifts. While some eagerly await presents they’ve specifically requested, others may find themselves surprised—or disappointed—by unexpected gifts. In this particular case, the joy of one fan quickly turned to confusion.
A Confusing Gift Experience for a Hornets Fan
The short video clip, which has garnered over 4 million views on X (formerly Twitter), featured a young Hornets fan alongside the team’s mascot, Hugo, who was dressed festively as Santa Claus. During the game, the public address announcer shared that the child had requested a PS5 as a reward for his hard work in school, expressing his excitement about possibly improving his jump shot in NBA 2K.
Initially, the fan received the highly coveted PS5, igniting cheers from the crowd. However, behind the scenes and after the cameras stopped rolling, a team representative asked the boy to return it, presenting him instead with a jersey. X user StanUSMNT, who shared this moment, expressed his disappointment, stating, “Take a bow Hornets, crushed the kid.”

The situation became even more awkward, as the kid’s father later shared that the entire experience felt “super awkward.” Text messages revealed the father’s feelings about the communication breakdown that led to the embarrassing moment.
If anyone wants more details here is how it went down. Seems like they may have been trying to do a skit (why?) and botched communication totally. I still don’t get giving kids stuff before Xmas that you aren’t letting them have even if it is a “setup.” That’s confusing and really 🤡 https://t.co/VKzsx38w5A pic.twitter.com/UYO7sHSxpe

In light of the backlash, the Charlotte Hornets issued an official apology, acknowledging that the stunt involved a “bad decision” and a failure in communication. They emphasized their commitment to rectify the situation, stating, “We have reached out to the family and are committed to not only making it right but exceeding expectations.”
To right the wrongs, the Hornets confirmed they would provide a PS5 to the fan and offer a VIP experience at a future game, much to the relief of many supporters who criticized the original decision to take the console away.

Reactions to the event have been mixed, with several fans labeling the interaction as “bogus” or “corny,” advocating for the team to improve how they manage such promotions in the future. The consensus among observers highlights the importance of clear communication, especially when children’s expectations hang in the balance.
The incident serves as a cautionary tale about the potential pitfalls of promotional events, particularly during the holiday season. Understanding and managing audience expectations is crucial for creating positive brand interactions.
