Viral Video of Lesserafim Sakura Crying During Vocal Lessons Divides Fearnots: ‘This Is Your Job…’

Following the spread of a video capturing LE SSERAFIM’s Sakura shedding tears during her vocal lessons, fans of K-pop took to the internet to express their diverse reactions towards the incident.

On July 29, 2024, LE SSERAFIM released the initial four installments of their documentary, “Make It Look Easy,”on HYBE’s official YouTube channel. In one of the episodes, Sakura was depicted crying during a vocal lesson when her trainer asked, “What caused you to lose confidence?”

During the interview, she admitted to experiencing fear when it comes to singing in front of others. She also shared her doubts about her career as an idol, questioning if it is truly the right path for her. She further expressed her belief that someone else, possibly more talented, could have been in her place if she had not made it as an idol.

Despite having developed negative thoughts about herself due to negative comments, Sakura still believes that being an idol is the job that brings her the most joy. She often questions why she has to endure difficult times and what her ultimate goal is.

The documentary also featured a video of Sakura practicing alone in the studio. Despite turning on the music to focus on her training, she ultimately broke down in tears.

Despite receiving sympathy from her fans, a significant number of international K-pop fans were unimpressed. They argued that, as an idol, it is expected for her to continuously practice and excel in singing. Many believe that being a skilled vocalist is the basic requirement for an idol and that their main responsibility is to perform in front of audiences. As Sakura has been in the industry for over 13 years and has been a part of three different groups (KT48, IZ*ONE, and LE SSERAFIM), critics have criticized her lack of improvement over the years.

According to their statements, even idols who possess natural talent continuously strive to improve themselves. One example that was mentioned was aespa’s Ningning, who was already recognized for her exceptional vocals before joining SM Entertainment. In an interview, she was asked about her longest practice session, to which she answered 12 hours. When the interviewer remarked about the difficulty of such a long practice, Ningning simply replied, “It’s not difficult. It’s part of my job.”

“It is widely believed that Sakura should embrace that mindset instead of pitying herself.”
