Virgil van Dijk incident branded a “joke” after Liverpool star escaped red card

The decision not to give Virgil van Dijk a red card during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Sheffield United in the Premier League has been criticized by fans of the Blades, who have labeled it a “joke.”

During a set-piece in the second half of a tense game at Anfield with the score tied at 1-1 in the 71st minute, Van Dijk was engaged in a physical battle with Sheffield United defender Auston Trusty.

Despite Van Dijk raising his hands to Trusty’s neck and pushing him to the ground as they grappled, the referee did not call a foul and the incident was not reviewed by VAR.

Despite Liverpool’s 3-1 victory, fans of Sheffield United and Liverpool’s opponents were quick to take to social media and criticize Jurgen Klopp’s team for what they perceived as a potential red card that went unnoticed during the game.

After watching a video of the incident, one fan expressed on X (formerly known as Twitter), “This has gone beyond being a joke.”Another fan added, “It’s ridiculous how Van Dijk continues to get away with this.”

A third individual pointed out that Van Dijk should have received a red card and a three game suspension for his actions of chokeslamming Trusty during the previous night’s match.

Manchester United supporters were similarly speedy to emphasize that their own team member, Casemiro, received a red card for placing his hands around Will Hughes’ throat in their previous 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace.

Additionally, supporters of Liverpool voiced their grievances with VAR, arguing that William Osula should have received a direct red card for his tackle on Ibrahima Konate during the 66th minute.

Despite being equalized at 1-1, a powerful shot from Alexis Mac Allister at the edge of the box gave the home team the lead in the 76th minute, followed by a header from Cody Gakpo in the 90th minute to secure a victory for Liverpool.

The outcome guaranteed that Liverpool maintains a two-point lead over Arsenal in the Premier League standings, with only eight matches remaining. Man City is also in contention for the title in third place, just three points behind Klopp’s team.
