Virgin River Season 6 Reveals Why Key Pool Table Scene Lacked an Intimacy Coordinator

Virgin River has long been synonymous with romance, and Season 6 Episode 5 raised the heat with a particularly steamy moment between characters Brie and Brady. Notably, this passionate encounter unfolded without the guidance of an intimacy coordinator, igniting discussions about the necessity of such roles on set.

The conversation was reignited after Mikey Madison’s revelations regarding the absence of an intimacy coordinator on the set of Anora, a show known for its explicit adult scenes. While some viewers reacted with dismay, asserting the importance of intimacy coordinators, others viewed this as a compelling argument against mandatory use in all productions. Regardless, the dialogue surrounding the topic was certainly brought back into focus, particularly with the sensual events in Virgin River.

This pivotal scene occurs during a heated kiss between Brie and Brady on a pool table in Jack’s bar, quickly escalating to a more aggressive display of passion.

Showrunner’s Insights on Episode 5

In a candid discussion with Variety, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith confirmed that no intimacy coordinator oversaw the memorable scene between Brie and Brady. It was noted that while the option was presented to the actors, they chose to proceed independently.

“We always offer,” Smith remarked, as he elaborated on the thought process behind the scene. “In that instance, Ben and Zibby declined it, but a lot of thought and consideration went into it. We work closely with RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), and I personally met with them to enhance my understanding of the complexities involved.”

Smith expressed his initial concerns regarding the palpable intensity of the scene. He stated, “The aspect that made me nervous was how far we would go. It’s essential to understand that sexual assault and violence are about power and domination rather than mere aggression. I believe we approached it with the necessary respect.”

Furthermore, he commended the actors’ commitment to understanding the material, noting, “Zibby and Ben conducted their own research, which enhanced their awareness and allowed them to navigate the scene effectively.”

Ben Hollingsworth, who portrays Brady, echoed these sentiments in an interview with Swoon. He shared his vision for the scene, wishing to convey a sense of spontaneity and unplanned emotion. “I wanted it to feel completely non-planned, completely just spur of the moment where they’re not thinking about anything,” he explained. “This should be the last thing anyone expects to happen in that moment.”

Virgin River Season 6 is currently streaming on Netflix, delighting fans with its captivating blend of romance and drama.
