Controversy continues to swirl around chess Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik, who has recently been suspended from Chess.com for a duration of six months. This suspension follows Kramnik’s persistent cheating allegations despite numerous warnings from the platform. His refusal to retract these accusations has raised serious concerns within the chess community.
Kramnik, a prominent figure in chess, is known for openly accusing other players of cheating. Notably, he has targeted rival Hikaru Nakamura, claiming foul play even after demonstrating his skill by achieving a remarkable 43-game winning streak in blitz chess. Historically, Chess.com has taken strong measures against Kramnik, previously suspending him for making baseless public allegations and even impersonating other players.
Kramnik Receives Another Ban for Cheating Allegations
On December 10, 2024, Kramnik lodged accusations against English International Master Thomas Rendle, claiming he had cheated during a Tilted Tuesday event. Chess.com responded promptly to this serious allegation.

Kramnik criticized Chess.com, stating, “What a disgrace chesscom allowing such blatant cheaters, 6 out of 6 this amateur, shame on you,” alongside a screenshot of his match against Rendle. Shortly after, Chess.com publicly announced his six-month suspension due to this ongoing behavior.
In their statement, Chess.com noted, “This is hardly the first instance in which Kramnik has violated our community policy in this way. Over the last year, he has used Chess.com event chats, forums, and most prolifically, X, to publicly question players. We have issued several warnings, and he was already suspended from prize events earlier this year. He has not, however, heeded those warnings.”

In light of his repeated violations, Kramnik’s suspension will remain in effect until June 10, 2025. Chess.com emphasized that questioning the integrity of other players can have detrimental impacts and urged anyone suspecting cheating to report their concerns directly to the platform for a thorough investigation.
Kramnik Involves Legal Counsel Following Suspension
Following the decision to suspend him, Kramnik took to social media to disclose his actions, stating that he had enlisted a lawyer to challenge Chess.com’s decisions. He shared an email indicating that his legal team would be requesting formal documentation from Chess.com regarding what he terms as unwarranted actions that have hindered his ability to express his opinions freely and led to financial losses.

In his communication, Kramnik requested that all decisions be provided formally, stating that such information is essential and should comply with legal standards. He also expressed frustration over the lack of responses to his previous reports on the platform and decided to let his legal representatives handle further communications.
I did many times, have NEVER received any answer after reporting on the platform. On top muted there, cant send any messages to anyone. Let lawyers talk now

As of now, Chess.com has yet to respond to Kramnik’s legal challenge, leaving the chess community to observe how this contentious situation will evolve. This incident is not an isolated case; legal disputes over cheating allegations have become increasingly common in the chess world. The most notable example involves Hans Niemann, Magnus Carlsen, and Hikaru Nakamura, who engaged in a legal showdown following Niemann’s alleged cheating in a 2022 over-the-board match.
