VTuber speaks out about Pokimane editor controversy and its impact on their identity

A VTuber has sparked a heated discussion by disclosing that they use a virtual avatar in order to avoid facing a similar situation to Pokimane’s viral dilemma with her former video editor.

On May 31, Imane ‘Pokimane’ Anys, a popular Twitch streamer with 9 million viewers, surprised her audience by disclosing that one of her past editors had a habit of missing deadlines due to a disturbing issue.

Anys explained that he would often turn in videos a week or two late because he couldn’t resist touching himself.

The streamer’s remarks caused a stir on social media, prompting viewers to express their disgust and bring attention to a prevalent issue in the industry. This even led popular YouTube star MoistCritikal to share his own experience with one of his editors.

Currently, VTubers are voicing their opinions on the matter, with one stating that their decision to use an avatar and refrain from revealing their true identity is to prevent encountering a situation similar to Pokimane’s.

VTuber Jellora wrote on X, “The reason we hide our faces is not because we are ugly, but because of the Pokimane editor situation. My brother in Christ also chooses to hide their face for the same reason.”

Several other VTubers shared their thoughts on the discussion. While some expressed their agreement with Jellora, others provided further explanations for their choice to conceal their appearance online.

“To be honest, one user replied that they simply do not want to experience a SWAT team raid.”

Another person stated, “For me, being anonymous is preferable. It allows me to fully express my true self without the pressure of being recognized by those in my real life. I don’t have to worry about people who already know me commenting on my opinions or actions.”

“The speaker added that they have been streaming for a significant amount of time and have observed that being a VTuber does not prevent individuals from engaging in such behaviors, let alone openly announcing it to the entire chat.”

Virtual YouTubers are recognized for utilizing a digital avatar as a representation of themselves, as opposed to appearing on camera. Typically, VTubers opt for anime-style avatars, although there are some exceptions, such as CodeMiko, who uses remarkably lifelike ones.

According to Jellora, a prominent topic of discussion regarding VTubers revolves around speculations that these broadcasters conceal their appearance because they fear being perceived as unattractive by their audience.

Despite the backlash received by faceless creators after their photos were leaked online, some have chosen to continue hiding their identity. For instance, popular Minecraft YouTuber Dream eventually revealed his face, while fellow content creator Corpse Husband remains committed to maintaining his privacy, a decision that is shared by many VTubers who work as online entertainers.
