Twitch’s recent policy adjustments regarding attire have sparked a significant outcry within the VTubing community, with many feeling that the platform is unjustly singling out their niche.
Unlike traditional streamers, VTubers utilize digital avatars, which often come with a hefty price tag when commissioned from talented artists.
On October 7, 2024, the updated guidelines mandated that all VTuber models must have specific coverage on the hips, emphasizing that “coverage of the hips is frequently overlooked.”
The VTubing community has taken to social media to express their concerns to Twitch, arguing that the creation of new models requires substantial investment of time and money, leading to widespread frustration and calls for accountability from the Amazon-owned service.
One VTuber, NeonHarper, received a “sexual content warning” on October 8 and sought clarification, only to be met with a vague response stating, “I cannot disclose if your content adhered to broadcast standards.”
“If you’re unable to inform us about the reasons behind our infractions, how can you expect us to react?” Harper articulated in a post on X/Twitter.
Hey @Twitch I’d really like to know why I got a sexual content warning for last nights stream. I had a onesie on with a normal amount of chest shown. I do not see why I got flagged. If you’re not capable of telling us why we got an infraction what do you possibly expect us to do? pic.twitter.com/4SgBk16reg

The perception is growing that Twitch is unfairly targeting VTubers. A notable response to an unrelated tweet from Twitch questioned, “Why is there hostility towards VTubers?”

Some users have humorously suggested that the only way to guarantee compliance with Twitch’s guidelines is by completely covering their models or only displaying the head of their avatars.

Moreover, critics have pointed out that Twitch does not appear to enforce these strict attire guidelines consistently among non-VTuber streamers.
“Twitch needs to clarify why IRL streamers can showcase more skin while VTubers are compelled to dress modestly, this is remarkably hypocritical,” commented X user SlyPerformer.
As of now, Twitch has yet to address the backlash regarding its recent policy changes, particularly their impact on the VTuber community.
