Wants to be Kubo so bad ~ Jujutsu Kaisen’s latest Gojo art has Bleach fans roasting Gege Akutami

With the release of the results of Jujutsu Kaisen’s 4th Popularity Poll, manga artist Gege Akutami unveiled new illustrations of the top three characters on the poll: Satoru Gojo, Yuji Itadori, and Megumi Fushiguro. These illustrations showed the characters in a more casual style, a departure from Akutami’s usual drawing style and more in line with Bleach creator Tite Kubo’s approach.

It was to be expected that Bleach fans would start making comparisons between the artwork of the two creators. As a result, many fans expressed their disappointment with the portrayal of Satoru Gojo in the new illustrations and criticized Gege Akutami for not being able to replicate the style of Tite Kubo’s artwork.

Why did fans criticize Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami?

As any fan of animanga would be aware, Tite Kubo, the creator of Bleach’s manga, has gained recognition for frequently depicting his characters in casual clothing for promotional purposes.

Ever since the beginning of the Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War anime, it has become increasingly apparent that the manga creator has been sharing illustrations of his characters on his blog website, Klub Outside, during the adaptation process. These illustrations are not limited to just being posted on X, but can also be found on his blog.

As a result, fans often linked these artworks with Tite Kubo. Therefore, when Gege Akutami shared his illustrations of Satoru Gojo, Yuji Itadori, and Megumi Fushiguro in casual attire and they did not meet the high standard set by Tite Kubo, fans started criticizing Gege Akutami. Surprisingly, the majority of the criticism was directed towards the Satoru Gojo illustration.

How Fans Reacted to the Gege Akutami’s New Illustrations

Despite facing a lot of criticism, Gege Akutami’s latest artwork was compared to Tite Kubo’s illustrations by a fan who felt that Akutami had not been successful in creating similar pieces.

“You’re not Tite Kubo, let it go Gege,”another fan said.

“leave the drip to kubo man drop the pen gege,”another added.

“Unfortunately Gege was not able to copy Kubo’s fashion design skills,”another said.

However, the fan was not the only one expressing this sentiment as several others also urged Gege Akutami to not attempt to imitate Tite Kubo’s style, as they believed he was not on the same level as the “Big Three”manga creators. The fans emphasized that Gege Akutami did not possess the same fashion design abilities as Tite Kubo.

The focus of fans was primarily on Satoru Gojo’s appearance in the new Jujutsu Kaisen illustrations. Not only were they unable to understand his outfit in the illustration, but they also expressed disapproval of the way his hair was styled, with a part on the side of his head.

“gege is NOT kubo bro what is he wearing… WHY DOES HIS HAIR PART ON THE SIDE OF HIS HEAD… WHY HIS HAIR LOOK LIKE AN ALBINO ONION?,”other fan said.

“This is the best one. Gege give us art like Kubo does for Bleach,”another fan expressed.

Despite this, there were still fans who appreciated Gege Akutami’s drawings, particularly the illustration of Yuji Itadori. As a result, they also requested for Gege Akutami to create more casual outfit artworks similar to those in Bleach.

  • Horikoshi does with My Hero Academia what Kubo and Kishimoto failed to do in Bleach and Naruto
  • Jujutsu Kaisen can ruin its legacy if Gege makes the same mistake as Tokyo Revengers
  • Gege Akutami may follow the “Aizen route”for Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen (but not in the way fans expect)
